Hey everyone. I was just wondering who applied to Columbia University's ETP program.
I got an email today telling me to keep logging into the website where I applied to check on the status of my application. Has anyone else got this email? And does anyone know approximately when they begin to post decisions?
I'm nervous as this was my #2 school.
Tempest I'm a little nervous about the paying for this. An earlier post said the 33k was pretty standard so i'm not surprised that you got that. I haven't received my package yet. I hope i can get some extra scholarships... but we'll see. Otherwise, i'm banking on a loan repayment program. I'm hoping after the first year, my boyfriend will be joining me so we'll have two incomes, and i'll be able to work part time. So i'm trying to just focus on making it through that first year! Congrats :)
I see to be one of the oldest here (31), but i dont' use this thread to make assumptions, because its a small sampling of the total, and maybe the "older" folk aren't as in to chat rooms, etc? :)
I am definitely planning on going to Visit Day! I am buying my tickets this weekend, once I firm up plans with my friend in Queens.
aspiring.midwife,
that's exciting you're from michigan! where near tc did you live? my family has a summer place in glen arbor and i worked in tc a few summers ago, but i'm actually from paw paw (a super small town downstate near kalamazoo) and i'm living in ann arbor now going to umich.
i'm not sure if i'm going to make it to the visiting day either, but if i do i'd definitely love to meet up. what are the other schools you're considering? i'm still looking at hopkins, yale, and emory... does anyone have any input on those programs compared to columbia? i hope your interview with ohsu went well! :)
megandan,
Thanks! My interview with OHSU did go well, but it's hard to say if it went well enough, ya know? All of these programs are so competitive, so I'm very aware that the applicant pool is very high caliber. I'll find out in 3 weeks, though, so that's good.
I'm from a very small town called McBain, which is about an hour south of TC. (near Cadillac). I spent one summer working in TC, and I got married in Boyne City on Lake Charlevoix. Love the area. We may eventually move back, but not anytime in the near future.
I also applied to UCSF (rejected), OHSU, Vanderbilt, and UIC. I would appreciate any info people have as well, particularly in comparison to Columbia. I have read a number of negative comments on allnurses about Columbia, which does concern me somewhat. Also the cost...
Thanks!
Hi All!What are your plans for housing? I'm planning/hoping to live off campus, and ideally would like to find another ETP student to share a two bedroom in Wash Heights, Morningside, or the West Side. Thoughts?
fionagurl,
i'm hoping to do the same thing. since i have two cats i can't do the on campus housing, and i'd rather live a little closer to the main part of manhattan. i've been browing craigslist and looking for places on the upper west side. rent of course is astronomical. ugh. since i'll be moving from brooklyn though, i'll be able to scope out places ahead of time, so that's a big plus. it would definitely be nice to find a place with other ETP students. hopefully those kinds of connections can be made at the visiting day!
Hi everyone,
I saw some of you live in NYC or close by, I was wondering can you guys give me some info on where to find apt/room around the city? My friend told me it is a big deal to find an apt in NY, there are some good and some bad neighborhood that we should be extra careful about it. I am going to apply for student dorm if there is any, which i have no idea. I saw from last year's post that most of school dorms are reserved for medical/dental students . I have never been to East coast in my life, and EXTREMELY nervous about the move.
Thank you so much!
Planet612 - you can apply for housing, and students living outside of New York are given priority. Definitely apply for rooms. They also have an off campus housing office, and I'm sure they can help you find an apartment in a safe neighborhood, and have worked with many landlords who are used to renting to students. Also, i think we are trying to do some roommate networking, as the two bedroom apartments are obviously cheaper.... I would talk to the housing office. They emailed me right back when i messaged them, and the housing staff will also be there at visiting day to answer questions.
As I am moving from Minneapolis, I am very curious about which is best, on campus vs off campus housing. Just looking at the info they provide it seems that on campus housing is cheaper and very easy (since you don't go apt hunting).
Cost is becoming a real issue. Looking at my letter, the first 3 semesters tuition total is 66k. That plus other expenses (including rent and living) bring it up to an estimated 100k. That's for the first year! Then it's another 2 years of two semesters at 22k a semester tuition.
For some reason I thought that the expenses would cap out at 100k not 225. So even with the 33 they toss our way and any scholarships I can win, it's barely going to put a dent in that.
Oh well, I wanted to go to a good school so here I am. The thing that gets me is that Harvards undergrad tuition is only 38k a year (estimated based on previous years on their website).
C'est la vie no?
Those visiting on march 6th should join the facebook group so we can plan it all out. I'm prob going to spend friday night in the city but will take off that weekend to go back to New Haven CT to visit some friends up at Yale.
Best of luck to those of you still waiting,
T

First time poster here, but I've followed the convo since the beginning.
I just found out 2 days ago I was accepted into Columbias ETP acute care program. I shouted so loudly i scared all my co-workers. Then the fire alarm went off, so we all went out for a beer.
For those that are curious, I have an undergrad GPA of 2.68 and a GRE score of 1365.
I just got my finanical aid package from columbia and it's 33,688. I know it's bad form to talk money but I am deathly curious about what other people were offered. It comes in two lumps, 22k the first year, 11k + change the next. If the program is 60 units the first year and then 49 (acute care) over the next 1.5 then that's around 100k for tuition alone not counting other expenses so I can see a price tag of 125k although I'd love to believe it much less than that. What are other peoples' experiences?
I just bought a plane ticket to go to the open house on March 6th, anyone else going? Be nice to know someone going on the same day.
I'm from Northern NY originally but spent time living in central NY, Southern Tier NY, CT and MN and now after all that time back to NY.
Btw, just curious, but what's the average age of people in ETP?
See you all that got in soon, for those that didn't, better luck in other schools,
