Psychiatric Nursing
I am on geropsych too! I know what you mean about violence and being freaked out. We have 6 weeks of orientation, but it is my first RN job too, so we have been told we are allowed more time if we need it! I just finished my week of desk orientation and start on the floor tomorrow! Nervous and excited, but mostly just want to see what its like! Good luck, Kayte!! =)

Psychiatric Nursing
I just graduated and got my first RN job in an inpatient behavioral health unit. Everyone looks at me like i'm the crazy one as well! Nursing isn't my first career - and i have spent most of my career in a MH/addiction setting in one role or another - maybe that helped? I am excited, and nervous! But I adore psych, i think the patients are wonderful. I agree that you will probably have better luck when you get your RN tho; inpatient psych needs the assessment/delegation skills that are outside the LPN scope of practice. Good luck!!!!! :)

To be or not to be a psych nurse
I was also advised that once you have your foot in the door at a hospital, there are opportunities for float or per diem on other units- so that you can get experience in both. It is also easier to transfer within a hospital, then get in from outside (or so I've seen). Have my second interview for inpatient psych today! Cross your fingers :)

Correctional Nursing Salary
Thank you those who posted on this page for turning this conversation around. I was starting to get VERY worried. Ultimately, we have to remember nursing is about human dignity. It doesn't matter who your patient is. I cannot wait for a job in correctional nursing. :)

Marquette - Direct Entry Master's??
We have one person who commutes from Gurnee, IL. It's not too bad. The one thing she wished she had known prior to starting was about "prep". For clinicals starting in fall, you have to go in to the hospital the night before to prep, so she had to drive up on her day off in the eve for an hour. I think that was a hassle. But otherwise, I don't think she minded.

Marquette - Direct Entry Master's??
I am in DE11. About half of our class had just graduated from undergrad a few days before beginning! I was kind of surprised by that, but anyway - housing here isn't' an issue. Plenty of people came last minute and found places. My landlord owns a ton of apartments right by campus, if you're interested I can give you the info. Good luck and congrats to all who got in. I wish someone had told me this BEFORE I accepted - but if you were planning to go FULL TIME for the graduate portion it's LIKELY NOT happening - unless you do gerentology! this was just sprung on us, and I was very disappointed! I'm sure all DE programs have their own issues. I'm just happy I'm almost done with the first 15 months!

Columbia ETP 2010
I would assume that to be the case..... I can't remember specifically what mine said. I just remember getting that email, logging in and being a bit disappointed. Good luck :)

Columbia ETP 2010
If i remember correctly that's true. They will give you an email that says something about your acceptance/rejection being posted, that's when you can log in and get the information. Just a few more weeks. (Last year we found out like Feb 2nd)!

Columbia ETP 2010
My understanding was you could defer for a year, but I'm not 100%!

Columbia ETP 2010
Hah! The waiting sucks, but the worst thing was we got an email from Judy Wolfe saying acceptance letters are posted, looked- I got in - super excited, then we get a second email like 5 minutes later saying there's been some errors in the letter, please disregard -so then we all had heart attacks thinking we were going to be unaccepted (especially because i could barely believe i got in in the first place!) and that we would have to wait until the next day for the final results, but then she emailed back again and said things were straightened out that night, so we didn't have to wait. It was awful tho! :) No, i am not a Columbia student- i decided Marquette was a better fit... tho i still question that decision a lot. Oh well - good luck :)

Columbia ETP 2010
It was February last year - I think I found out mid-February. Yeah, they don't leave you a lot of time, but it was one of the earliest responses I got from schools - others didn't come out until late Feb/early March. I just checked - i got my acceptance on February 2nd, via Email.

Columbia ETP 2010
I'm at Marquette. I have some issues with it. Def. cheaper, though I often question whether I would be getting a better education at Columbia, and that it would be worth paying for. Right now I feel like I'm still paying a lot, and only getting about 50% back as far as quality of teaching, etc. Good luck tho :) I would be curious to hear whether the first year is similar most places. I know I've heard complaints about Columbia as well. I've heard from several people who are a year ahead of me that the GRADUATE portion of Marquette is far superior to the first year. SO, we can all keep our fingers crossed!

I am in a direct entry program right now. IT is for people who have a bachelors, not an ADN. You need a bachelor's in something to get into direct entry. If you have an ADN, you can bridge into an MSN program, its just slightly longer. :)
