Hey everyone. I was just wondering who applied to Columbia University's ETP program.
I got an email today telling me to keep logging into the website where I applied to check on the status of my application. Has anyone else got this email? And does anyone know approximately when they begin to post decisions?
I'm nervous as this was my #2 school.
mribera1, Wow! What an interesting background! It's cool that you chose nursing. What is everyone else's background if you don't mind me asking?
I was a history major and spent the last five years working with children and adults with mental retardation. My academic background was a bit shaky in the beginning, but I sent them a letter explaining what happened.
I did a premed undergrad, then spent all my time working in community mental health. The last three years I worked in a methadone clinic, and then as a case manager at a Syringe Exchange. I love working with injection drug users - and I saw how the medical community treated them, and thought HEY - I can do better! So, now I will! Columbia was the only school I saw with an Addiction minor, and NYC is the birth place of Harm Reduction in the US - so its PERFECT for me. I am finally accepting that I got in and getting very, very excited! The last couple days I've just been waiting for them to tell me it was a mistake.... But i'm getting over that now :)

That's excellent! I'm really into HIV/AIDS prevention and I believe that needle/syringe exchange programs are beneficial to stopping the spread. It's great that you are willing to work with that community because not many people are willing to do so.
It's great that HIV infection is so low, but unfortunate that Hep C is so high. I think that my downfall is that I don't have any experience working with people with HIV/AIDS. I know a lot about the science and the social aspects, but I don't have any experience actually working with the population. I really wanted to get in and do Columbia's minor in HIV/AIDS.
I'm still waiting and it's driving me nuts!
Hang in there, jcarranz! The end of the week (and hopefully an acceptance for you) will be here soon.
I graduated with a degree in Biology three years ago, with a 3.0 GPA and 1300 on my GREs. I have since spent time volunteering at an ED here in SF, with the SF Aids Foundation HIV/AIDS/STD hotline, SFAF Magnet events, and have worked in a hematopathology lab since graduation. It's wonderful to hear that you both endorse harm reduction and are educated about disease prevention as well. It believe it will be very applicable in our future careers!
Hope to meet you both on Visitor's Day.. :)
fionagurl - yay for Harm Reduction. I am a HUGE fan. I applied to UCSF, but didn't have any luck. So i'm really excited about NYC. I want to spread syring exchanges across the country, educate my patients about proper and safe injecting, and get more people into maintenance programs that aren't so punitive. US needs to stop being so puritanical around all this stuff! Huzzah!
Jcarranz - i am sending good vibes to you. I don't have any direct patient care experience other than the case management - which wasn't very "medical" so don't let that worry you too much. Keep us posted!

I'm originally from CA, but I've been in NYC for seven years now (OMG I feel sooo old!) - I went to NYU for acting as an undergrad and worked as a personal trainer/spin instructor the whole time ... somehow along the way I decided to do this. I am so excited - I can't wait to start the program already!!
