CNA's graduating in March-April!

Published

This thread is for those of us who are enrolled in a CNA course right now, and/OR will be certified between March and April. Here is where we rant, network, and/or brag about the way our course (s) are going, our experiences finding a job after our course/internship is completed, and what our plans are for the future (Nursing school, etc.).

We started this topic in another thread, lets keep this going! :heartbeat

Here is a little YouTube humor for all of us potential CNA's. A typical day in the life of a Certified Nursing Assistant :yeah::

Yes! I was looking at the one at York College too, LOL. However, the Allen School, where I'm taking my CNA class right now, also offers the PCT upgrade, and its only 60HRS for people who took their CNA course but I do believe its about a month or two additional. I'm now wondering, if I get certified as a PCT after I become a CNA can I still apply for CNA positions?

Because I heard somewhere on these boards that if you become an RN you could never work as a LPN if even if you have both licenses. I'm thinking would York College look better on my resume (Vain moment) or would my resume look better if I am consistant with one institution (Allen School)? Are any one of you working on your resumes? Are you going to put previous non CNA related work experience, or leave it off the resume?

I really want to work for NYP- New York Presbyterian so I think i'm going to volunteer there after my CNA class is done and while i'm working as a CNA for about a year, then, i'm gonna apply to Nursing school in the SPR of next year with a years exp. as a CNA and apply for a PCT job at NYP. After i'm done with the CNA class i'm gonna finish any pre reqs I need for nursing school this year, and get my Nursing Application together. :redbeathe

Only God (or whoever your higher power is, if you believe in one) knows how it will turn out for us all. I hope all of you that have started your classes are enjoying them and those who are anxiously waiting, are keeping your cool :lol2:

Since my girl here is from the NYC area here is a list of all Nursing Homes in NYC so you have a heads up:

And resources for NYC CNAs ie CNA registry, BOARDS exam info etc:

..Just felt generous. But your license is going to be a NJ license?

+ I am so mad, because I found a place that PAYS you to take a CNA course AFTER I paid $1300 for mines! :

Sorry, lol had to pass on the SPITE :angryfire lol..

I have more resources that will come out of the wooodwork in due time. We gotta take things one step at a time, i'm learning this the hard way, to not try and accomplish too much at one time because its better to do one thing supremely well, than many poorly.

Sorry some of yall are having problems with your class :( I really enjoy mines a lot. Today we had our first test (i got a 100% :D)

Lucky you, I only got a 90% on my first test:bowingpur

We went over how to wash your hands, but didnt do personal care yet, that's going to start next week. My teacher said a trick to use when washing your hands is to sing happy birthday 2Xs and it will be exactly 15+ seconds; not out load of course :D:redbeathe

My program starts next week and ends May 10th, then it goes on for Home

Health Aid.. Also doing pre reqs for RN (Chem and Anatomy)

How is your class going? What pre-reqs do you need for Nursing till you can apply to the program?

What about 2nd or 3rd shifts?

I'd think alot of places would probably jump at someone willing to do just weekends- the times most everyone else wants off... Also- a thought for full time work... depending on where you are- you may be making 12+/hr- that means around 1300 after taxes (guesstimate) so- that's still $500/mo. after the daycare. For the experience and especially for the resume that may be worth it.

Then again- on the flip side of that is- with 3 kids- and working- study time would be at a premium... So that's another consideration...

In any event- whatever you do- good luck to you! :)

Oh, I didn't say what my goals are...well my initial goal was to do my CNA online then do my RN online. Well the program for the online CNA didn't get started and I got laid off so that allowed me to start the class last week on campus.

I've applied for the online RN program through a local community college for this fall and I'm anxiously awaiting my acceptance letter.

I may or may not work as a CNA. Quite honestly, I don't believe the pay is going to be enough to make it worthwhile...at least while I'm able to get unemployment. I have 3 children and daycare costs me $200 a week, you know your paycheck so $200 after insurance and deductions just doesn't make much sense. So we will see, if I can work every weekend then I will go that route.

A 90 is great!! I'll have to keep the happy b-day song in mind, that should come in handy :)

I'm looking, I've found a few hospital websites that have part time positions posted. My instructor has some recruiters coming on our last day of class so I'm hoping they will have something for me.

My husband is a truck driver so he isn't home during the week. I can ONLY do first shift right now. Weekends I'd consider 2nd or 3rd.

$12 an hour would actually be alot for a CNA in this area. One local hospital pays $8.?? an hour, but they have excellent benefits. Others are $9-10. If I could get $12 I'd jump on it, even fulltime, that's what I was making when I got laid off in November.

I started my CNA class January 22 and it goes until April 22nd! Its a long course but its a really good one. We have already learned so much. I love this class a lot!! The skills take a lot of practice and I hope I can perfect them!

Well, good luck on your hunt! That has to be hard. Something you could try too is to put a listing on Craigslist- asking for someone to swap childcare with- someone who works an opposite shift to yours- where you watch her kids while she works, she watches yours while you do... You'd have to do alot of interviewing and be very careful- but it could be a Godsend if you found the right match... :) Good luck!!!

Hey everyone! I hope y'alls classes are going well! We have our first quizes tomorrow and clincals on Friday!!!! :w00t:

My class is going a lot better from the last time I posted. I think my instructer was having an off day because when we meet for class on Saturday she was awesome, supportive, caring, and funny too! Shame on me for judging her :crying2:

We have 20 people in our class! Can you believe that?! I hear that is a lot!

If you get tired of singing Happy Birthday, I hear the ABC song is another good option.

The class Im going to take has a maximum of 12 students. I was glad to hear that! 20 does sound like a lot.

Hi everyone... my CNA course starts March 2nd and I am excited. I am also going to school online for medical billing and coding and once I finish that, I will be going to ASU to receive my BSN. I know it sounds like alot, but I rather do the short CNA course and be able to work in the field that I want to be in instead of taking other jobs that I am not interested in, not that anyone has tried to hire me anyway.

I look forward to sharing information as I get into the course. It is a 5 week course and my clinicals will be on the last week.

Good luck everyone
