CNA's graduating in March-April!

Published

This thread is for those of us who are enrolled in a CNA course right now, and/OR will be certified between March and April. Here is where we rant, network, and/or brag about the way our course (s) are going, our experiences finding a job after our course/internship is completed, and what our plans are for the future (Nursing school, etc.).

We started this topic in another thread, lets keep this going! :heartbeat

Here is a little YouTube humor for all of us potential CNA's. A typical day in the life of a Certified Nursing Assistant :yeah::

Hey everyone! I hope y'alls classes are going well! We have our first quizes tomorrow and clincals on Friday!!!! :w00t:

My class is going a lot better from the last time I posted. I think my instructer was having an off day because when we meet for class on Saturday she was awesome, supportive, caring, and funny too! Shame on me for judging her :crying2:

We have 20 people in our class! Can you believe that?! I hear that is a lot!

Glad to hear your class is going better :) 20 seems like a lot !!! I think I only have 10 or 11 in my class.

Wow, so, the inevitable happened tonight, and we began the week by learning Bed pan, Peri Care, Catheter Care, and I/O (Urinal) i.e. emptying catheter bags etc. I noticed someone said they had 20 people in their class. We have 14. So a pretty decent sized group.

Anyway, geez the guys in my class were laughing hysterically when the teacher demoed female peri care and we were taught how to clean the lady parts. All sort of manner of evil was going on LOL :D Nah, just a couple of them licking their lips and cracking jokes about how her vag would probably be all sloppy at 90 yrs old Eh, Idk. They seemed to be experts at male peri care though.

Tomorrow were going to do Bowel movements/Peri Care

Peri Care has to be the most involved skill we are going to learn in this CNA class. We were required to do Urinal Output- Bed pan, Peri Care, and then Catheter Care/Emptying urine bags - All in one shot, and back to back. So the teacher made us combine the skills, and also graded us on Infection control and PPE use. :uhoh3:

I really need practice with Peri care etc. If I can master this, the BOARDS would be easier to pass. Im kinda aggrivated because my teachers handwritting sucks so we cant really make out her handwriting on the board. We got spoiled as a class with the last teacher writing all the notes on the board. Her kids need to help her with her powerpoints so we can use the projector :angryfire

What skills have you all went over so far?

Is I/O input & output?

How exactly do you practice peri care? I can't imagine that they would have a live person! The boys would probably be doing more pushing and shoving (to get a good view) than making jokes!

Welcome to our thread, Lulumimi! My class starts March 2nd too.

I'm helping my mom look into a medical coding classes. Any advice?

We practice on manikins, lol. The teacher was like "CRADDDDLEEEEE THE member!" LMAO!:lol2: Ahh tonight was classic.

Thanks Dondie :)

I go to CTU Online and I love it. I love that we actually have class , via the internet of course, twice a week. I know University of Phoenix does not have that option, but I learn better when I have a professor reinforcing the material.

We are going over body mechanics and positioning tonight. Thursday we go over hygiene, grooming, and bathing.

Our instructor was telling us on Saturday that some resident's poop while you give them a shower. I don't know how to tell her, but I have the WORST gag reflex ever. Everytime I change my 8 month old's diaper I dry heave...What am I going to do when I help an adult out?? I don't want to offend a resident if I get sick ya know? My mom was saying "This isn't a good career for you then"...Maybe I will get use to it?

Hello!

I started my LNA/CNA class in January! I'll be graduating March 20th, and taking the State Exam the 23rd! Im so excited, I love what we are learning, and the residents are so much fun!

will be takin my test first week of may!

Just had our first clinical yesterday, fun stuff.

Serendipity, Thanks for inviting me to your thread!!!! I start class on March 16th. I have no medical experience whatsoever so Im a bit nervous!!! Are you from NY? I live in the Bronx and work in Manhattan

Wow! I'm glad to see so many people have joined us!

Today, I didn't have any class so I basically worked on getting any documents I needed or retrieving applications for documents I need in order to take BOARDS. I played around with the idea of re-vising my resume, and I'm considering upgrading my CNA cert. to Patient Care Tech after I'm done.

Does anyone think this is a good idea? The only difference is more money, of course, but we get to insert/remove foleys and catheters (I believe) and do blood work etc. Alot of people compare being a PCT to being an LPN except we dont make as much, OR have as much education.

But.

They are supposedly replacing LPNs with PCTs because it cheaper to hire us, and we basically have alot of the same skills ie: EKG and Phlebotomy + ADL Skills. However, I dont know if its worth it to pay for this class at the Allen School where i'm doing my CNA class because some facilities will train you on the job.

Other than that, this weekend i'll be studying and watching the CNA videos that I found on this site. Next week we are doing Personal Care: Bed baths, I/O etc :o My teacher totally put a couple people in place during class this week because they were "echoing" her. You know, the type of student that likes to complete the teachers sentences when the teacher is lecturing :lol2: LOL. She said " If you feel you could teach my class, PLEASE! Come teach and I will sit down. Do not echo me. If you know everything, you dont need to be here. I did not survive 27 years in the ER being an idiot. You are here to learn, so if you know everything please leave. I already have my career! I will respect you, if you respect me. Long story short the person who was attacked had a history of being obnoxious in class and she doesnt disturb the class anymore. I didnt pay $1300 in a class to hear a student lecture! ;)

Anyway, does anyone think the PCT upgrade is worth it? And, I see someone else is from NY! What CNA program are you in?

Hi.. Im actually doing the CNA so that I can do the PCT. So I think its worth it.. I am in NYC and will be going to Manhattan Institute

Yeah I'm from NYC and almost went to MI as well! But, decided to go to Allen School instead since its right in Queens :redbeathe What can I say, its too cold for me to travel on the train/bus late at night etc. Its a good program so far. But gosh, I really need to work on that trio skill the teacher gave us: Peri care/Catheter/and Bed Pan. The skills aren't hard its all the precautions you have to take for infection control, patient privacy/comfortability etc. that get confusing. :angryfire

I need to go study!!!

Please tell me how the MI program goes for you when it starts. When you start your program in March, i'll be finishing mines: God-willing.:up:

I started my class Feb 9th. It's 4 weeks long so I should be done with the course March 9th. :) It runs from 8 AM - 2:30 PM, Monday through Friday.

So far I am enjoying the course. My instructors are awesome and they seem like they actually give a damn about their students. I had a difficult time getting into the course to due lack of funding and resistance from family but they took the extra time to help me out. My theory instructor has a 100% pass rate so I think I will learn a lot from her.

Tomorrow will only be my 3rd day but I'm already a bit nervous.. I LOVE the theory part of the course (I loved the theory part of the nursing courses I took also) and I catch on easily, but I am worried about mastering the skills and performing well in clinical. I have low self-esteem and barely a shred of confidence so I worry about being good.. I worry about making mistakes and being good at what I do. I worry about not catching onto the physical skills as fast as others, especially when I am practicing them in front of an audience..

My class is really small.. about 6 people.. I feel a little weird being the youngest and the only one without children. I love the small class size but I get nervous practicing skills in front of the class because I hate having an audience/being the center of attention.

I'm very grateful for the chance to take this course because working as a CNA for a while will help me decide if I want to finish off my BSN (I'm two pre-reqs short of clinicals!) and stay in the field of health care. Sometimes I think it's right for me; I've shown such an interest in it for my entire life even though I'm young. I just worry about working in LTC and dealing with very, very difficult Alzheimer's and dementia residents. I have no experience with it and I don't know how good I will be at it. I have an idea of what to expect but I know that school doesn't fully prepare you to handle such tricky and stressful situations.

I'm nervous but maybe I just need a little more experience to help boost my confidence. But despite my apprehension I'm looking forward to seeing what this course has to offer and what I can learn from working as a CNA.
