This thread is for those of us who are enrolled in a CNA course right now, and/OR will be certified between March and April. Here is where we rant, network, and/or brag about the way our course (s) are going, our experiences finding a job after our course/internship is completed, and what our plans are for the future (Nursing school, etc.).
We started this topic in another thread, lets keep this going! :heartbeat
Here is a little YouTube humor for all of us potential CNA's. A typical day in the life of a Certified Nursing Assistant :
Hey gals! My name is Stefanie I am 22 and a stay at home mom!
I do need some encouragement this morning. Last night was my first class period and I feel as if my instructor is a bit of a joke. She says she is an OR Nurse, but I find that her being a nurse is crazy! She is so unogranized and you should have seen our syllabus! She spelled Hygene - higine! She was also 15 minutes late to class last night and during her lecture she was going on and on how she would never hire someone who was late to an interview.
My gut is telling me that there is something up with this woman...I am pretty scared I am not going to learn the things I need to pass the exam next month...
Sorry to sound a little down, crabby, whinny, but we paid $1,200 for this course; I expected way more! HELP ME THROUGH THIS PLEASE!
Well- spelling isn't everything... :) It's actually 'hygiene'- so you're both in the same boat on that one... She forgot an 'e', you forgot an 'i'. It happens. :)
Teaching is very different from doing the job. I wonder how many classes she's taught there... Give it a chance... If the feeling continues after another class or two- ask the program administrators how long she's been teaching- politely express your concerns- and go from there... Everyone has a bad day now and again- this *might* (hopefully) just have been one of hers... MHO.

That is exactly how I felt about my first professor. I understand your pain! I paid $1300 for this course, and my physical for clinicals is not included lol. Anyway, I will post a link to the practice exam (Written part) when I get in tonight from class. Here is a link to a couple of videos that will prepare you for the skills part of your exam: https://allnurses.com/cna-nursing-assistant/free-full-cna-191189.html I found this to be very helpful! (As soon as you get over the fact that the lady speaks in a monotone voice, lol) Am I the only one who has a pretest before BOARDS?
How cute that he wants to play! Awesome for you too to have someone to practice with. He must really look up to you. Realize it or not, because you are choosing to continue your education it's likely he will choose to also. Wouldn't it be awesome if he-or your sister-went into the medical field too!I'm happy that you have a good teacher. It can make a huge difference, can't it! Sounds like tomorrow is an important day! How exciting!
What things do you take with you to class? Like supplies, I mean. Pen & paper, etc. Just wondering what I can pick up. I'm so anxious to get started!
I know, he is a complete sweetheart. My little sister wants to be a nurse :) Unfortunately he looks up to me so much he says "When I grow up I wanna be an FBI agent, a fireman, or a CNA. Its not "unfortunate" because I will be VERY PROUD of my title as a CNA, but you know, you always tell little kids to shoot for the stars, and be a Doctor. Anyhow, when he says that he secretly tickles my heart :) I bring my CNA book, stethoscope (upon request), watch with a second hand, notebook (1 Subject), Pen, Gloves (That were given to us in class), and thats it! All of the stuff we need to practice skills are pretty much in the class. I posted a link of CNA videos that I found on here. When I was anxious about starting class, that what tied me over, LMAO! If any of you are going into Nursing afterwards, what unit would you like to work in? I may wanna work in Peds, so hopefully if I get a job in a hospital, I would love to work in peds as a CNA. I found a couple of nursing homes that actually house children (Disabled/Confused/etc.).
My grandma had such interesting stories...I would be so captivated. I just know its something I've always wanted to do. I'm so excited! I can leave this God forsaken desk job where my boss treats me like I'm the dumbest thing walking in this office... i want to do something where its worth while, fulfilling, and means something... I know you all will do well! I'm not from NY I'm from SW Florida :w00t: but i do wish I could visit NY more often... i love it there!
I started my CNA class on Jan 30th, we have our mid-term in two days. I'm ahead of the class so I can concentrate on studying instead of doing homework.
Honestly, I do not like my class. Here is what we do. We go in at 8am. The instructor either pops in a video or hands us worksheets to fill out. We get a break at 9 and then eat lunch at 11. At some point during that time, he might spend 30 minutes teaching something out of the 3 chapters we are going over that day. Then after lunch, we usually have a video. We take a break and then he hands us another handout, this is our assessment to see how much we've retained. We have until the end of class to finish it. It takes me all of 20 minutes and then I spend the next 1 1/2-2 hours working on that nights' homework. He usually comes in at the end of class, says a few words then dismisses us.
It's actually quite annoying that I have to show up to class for this. Oh and did I mention that one of the handouts that he uses is for a completely DIFFERENT book and most of the answers aren't even found in our book. There are 2 of that book in the classroom, to be shared by 15.
I'm just ready for the classroom part to be over and labs/clinicals to start.
State test is March 2nd, btw.
Oh, I didn't say what my goals are...well my initial goal was to do my CNA online then do my RN online. Well the program for the online CNA didn't get started and I got laid off so that allowed me to start the class last week on campus.
I've applied for the online RN program through a local community college for this fall and I'm anxiously awaiting my acceptance letter.
I may or may not work as a CNA. Quite honestly, I don't believe the pay is going to be enough to make it worthwhile...at least while I'm able to get unemployment. I have 3 children and daycare costs me $200 a week, you know your paycheck so $200 after insurance and deductions just doesn't make much sense. So we will see, if I can work every weekend then I will go that route.
Sorry some of yall are having problems with your class I really enjoy mines a lot. Today we had our first test (i got a 100%
) , watched a couple videos on patient privacy & how to prevent falls. Also we practiced how to wash our hands & cleaning dentures.. I need some work on the 2nd one lol. I'm sort of upset though b/c I need a Hepatitis B vaccine in order to complete my medical form for the class, but I found out my insurance wont cover the price & its $128.99
Does your school have a clinic? My Community College does and even if you have insurance it is cheaper than going to the doctor. I didn't go through my
insurance for that medical clearance stuff because I have a high deductible and
the titers and vacs fall under that... I pay all costs up front, then it goes to my
$5000 deductible.

ladymahogany - I think she was sort of softening the blow because she disagreed. That's how I took it anyway because that's what I would do.
