CNA's not completing assignment. Vent.

I just worked an overnight shift and it was my first night being the only LPN on the unit. When it comes to CNA's I trust them to complete their assignment without any nagging. Well they kinda changed that.

They left at 7am and the day CNA's came to us during report and said that only a few residents were totally dressed. They are assigned a couple residents for each assignment to get up in the morning. In my definition- get up means out of bed to chair, changed, cleaned, dressed, ready for the day and brought in for breakfast. 4 residents per CNA.

I felt like a total idiot because they didn't do their job. I wrote their names and assignment down for the day supervisor. I am ******. I have a lot of work to do during the night. If I don't do it. I get written up. I really hope I don't get written up for what they didn't do. I know I am responsible for them to make sure they did their assignment but their assignments are their responsibility.

Did I do the right thing in reporting this to the supervisor? Should I have made my expectations of them clear when I made the assignments of the night?

Should I have made my expectations of them clear when I made the assignments of the night?

Yes.

Believe me the assignments were clear. They just chose not to do them. Once they left the building, "oh, well". They are breaking you in to let you know who is really in charge. Since you informed the supervisor, you should soon find out how much support you are going to get from that source, so you will know how horrid your job is going to be. Good luck.

Its a shame but you have to check behind some of them to make sure things are done. I am on my 2nd wk orientation at a LTC facility and i will be by myself soon. thier is alot of things i be seeing that i dont like. At the place i work RN have to do thier own vital signs. I think that is BS and it really slows you down during your med pass. you have 25- 30 pts. thier is know reason why they cant do vitals 1st thing in the morning. it is within their scope of practice. also some of them will leave ace wraps on residents legs all night. When you go to wrap the legs you notice the ace wraps were never taken off . some will sit around like theirs nothing to do. when all the resident are in bed and safety measures are in place i think it a good time to make sure gloves are stock in each room, unnecessary clutter is off the floors, garabage bags are replace, h2o is at the bed side etc... I needed to vent as well

The supervisor was there during report. She asked for their names and assignments.

This isn't permanent. I am covering a couple of shifts. Tomorrow I am on a different unit. I have worked with the CNA's down there before and they do their job no questions asked. I guess I was wrong to assume the same on this unit.

It might not hurt to "set the tone" early on a new unit just to be safe. When making the assignments let them know you will check and they will be held accountable, then follow through. Before long you'll be known for it and won't have to do it each and every time; You'll just have to "update" people on your expectations. Good luck--I've worked with CNA's who were rarely even around let alone taking care of pts!

I am very fortunate,The LNAs that work on my unit, for the most part do their assignments. They are required to do AM care on 3 residents each. If time allows they will do some extra. To the OP I'm sorry you're CNAS took advantage of you.

You are being "tested"as a new employee. Go slowly. It's too easy to become authoritarian and confrontational. You senior nurses KNOW this. Your DON knows this.

I would like to believe that perhaps the CNAs were busy that morning or the patients were difficult to get up, wash, dressed and brought out for breakfast all at the hands of one person. Could this have been possible? I'm an RN and there are days that I go home and haven't completed all my duties simply because it was a grossly busy day!

I realize this is a vent but please make every effort to spell check your posts and use correct grammar. Please remember that this board is open to the public and they may make judgments about the profession as a whole based on what they see here. Thank you.

I totally understand what you're talking about. this happens with some of the cna's that i work with. we are all adults and know what are job duties are and nurses shouldn't have to go behind them to see if they've done their jobs when we (nurses) have a ton of things to do ourselves. eventhough i'm busy all night, i know if rounds are being done, and who has to get up. i don't bother them and they don't bother me. unfortunately, there are those cna's that won't get off their behinds and do what they are hired to do and you should report it IMMEDIATLY!

I wondering if the night cna's had a horrible night and were not able to get these residents ready for the morning shift. When I was a cna I would normally give report to the oncoming cna so that they knew what was going on. At one place I worked at we were suppost to give the nurse report, but they were usually to busy and would not tell the oncoming cna's anyways.
