CNA salary

I'm not a CNA, have never been one- but I wish I had been. I appreciate CNAs, and I am trying to convince my brother to become one. The job market is wide open for CNAs and he needs a job with benefits. Right now he makes in the $7/hr. range which is hard to live on, even when working 40hrs./wk. Unfortunately, he is pretty much the only income in his household right now while his fiancee is out of work and he could not afford to spend 4-6 weeks in training if the pay is not much more than he makes now. So, if not too intrusive, how much do you make working as a CNA, and do you work in a hospital, LTC, or for an agency? TIA

i live in lansing michigan and we make between $10.40 and 13.00/hour.

Specializes in HHA, CNA, EKG, Phleb.

I was offered $8/hour with no experience by an agency (in NYC) or $10-$15 depending on the experience I had. At local hospitals they offer $11-$13 but they seem much more competitive. That's not too bad.

Hi everybody....just wanted to let you know what I have been offered in upstate NY. $11.55 an hour for starters, then 12 something(I forget exactly) after 3 months. I will be working in a nursing home where I am also taking my CNA class. The class is free, as well as the exam and they pay me during the class!!!! I am committed to work a full 18 months there to avoid having to pay. Otherwise, it will be pro-rated. Benefits start after 3 months as well. Good Luck!!

Im in Rhode Island, i just got a job in a nursing home making 9.25 an hour FT with fabulous bennies! You get raises frequently i find. they are going to pay my full tuition for my RN associates, i just have to contract with them for 2 yrs. big deal. I will be getting health and dental for about 17 dollars a week! and the best part for me is that its only 3 and 1/2 miles from my home! doesnt get any better than that. I hope he goes through with it. its a tough job but very rewarding (i know its sounds cliche). Good luck!

In Chicago most of the ltc facilities are union and they start you pretty low 9.50 i think with annual raises.

I always work in the subs of Chicago most pay 13-17 an hour depending on the facility. This is before differentials.

agencys pay 12-20hr here depending on your experience.

Most hospitals..13-17 hr.

and I know plenty of lpn's that make 30 hr,rn's 50 hr.....

Cost of living is high.

When I lived in Cali I made 10-14 hr but that was 4 years ago.

Specializes in MedSurg.-Tele, Home health, LTC.

i was working as an na for 10 years before i became an rn, i started at a payrate of $9.00 in a home health aide setting, then when i work in the hospital, my base rate was $10.35, shift differential not included. beleive it or not, when i quit my na job a year i was making $14.97 an hour..not too bad, eh?

Specializes in Psychiatric nursing.

I work in a LTC facility and my base pay is $11.30 an hour. I get a $1.50 3-11 shift differential plus a $2 weekend differntial. When they are desperate for more staff to come in I can get critical pay as well which is $5 more an hour. My facility will also pay for all my tuition to get my RN, I have to work 12 hours a week while in school but will get paid for 40 hours on top of full tuition. I've only been working there for three months as well. What a deal! You also get full medical and dental and life insurance when you are 24 hours regularly scheduled or more.

Kay28, which state do you live in b/c that sure is a good deal for a CNA.

Specializes in LTC.

That is an awesome deal for a CNA! I want to know which state that is, too.

I live in Iowa, and I started out at $8.50/hr because I wasn't certified. With being certified and a minimum wage raise bump, I am now at $10/hr which is what they start at now. After being there for a year, my LTCF will pay for LPN or RN schooling, but I'll be starting my LPN schooling this fall, so if I stay they'll be paying for my RN only. There is no shift diff where I work, which I heard is really uncommon.

Specializes in Psychiatric nursing.

I live in Massachusetts. I was lucky to find such a place considering I had no prior experience.

Specializes in ICU CNA.

I was a CNA on the ICU of a hospital where I grew up. The one and only reason that I left was because I had always wanted to be a flight attendant my whole life...now that I have the job, I regret ever leaving the healthcare field. I plan to become a CNA again and then get my RN but with the wait lists here in upstate NY, it looks like it may be a little while for either one to happen. At the hospital I worked at, I made 9.00/hr plus shift differential of 1.75 since I worked 7p-7a. I LOVED working on the ICU....the adrenalin rush is amazing!

Specializes in ORTHO/TRAUMA/MED/SURG/TELEMETRY.

I work in a Hospital in NORTHEAST Philadelphia and the base rate is 14.49 per/hr plus a .75 cent shift diff (i work 2nd shift) So i make 15.24 an hour and on the weekends i make a dollar more plus the shift diff, so 16.24$ an hour. And im still fresh out of CNA school. I only had 4 months exp in home health care, and 2 months in a nursing home. Home care paid 9.75 an hour. Nursing home paid 11.50, 12.50 on weekends. So I guess it all depends on where u work.
