Nursing Students CNA/MA

Hello, I'm new to this site and I was just wondering if anyone had any tips or advice on getting hired as a cna. I'm a new grad, and every place I apply to is offering only $8. If not that they want 6 months to a year experience. I live in NEW York and I'm willing to travel. Please help!!!!

That's about what it starts out here for new grads. I think part of the reason is because they aren't sure if you will really last and you'll be slow for the first few months. After six months, most other places will take the risk of hiring you as you're less likely to quit or leave in their eyes and you will have some experience under your belt. After a year, a hospital is more likely to hire you if you're also in a nursing school program.

Thanks everyone for your output.I'm still looking, the lowest I'm willing to work for is 10. The money is just a part of it, I love helping other's. But minimum wage is $8 I could be a cashier for that price.

Most of the people don't get that yes, CNA's are very well underpaid everywhere but if you're working towards becoming a nurse, what you don't get in $ you get in experience and no one can take that away from you. Having patient experience and an ADN may be the difference between you and a BSN no experience candidate over an interview. Lots to consider.

:no:Nope, Nope I will not work for 8 dollars an hour. That is an insult to the CNA profession. I wish it would be federally mandated to pay CNA's 11.00 and up and have no more than 10 patients. I just rejected a job offer for 10.00 dollars an hour recently. I know my worth. And the minimum wage will increase to $10.10 in July. I refuse to do all of what a CNA does for 16 patients and more for $8 dollars. And OP please say you do have experience. Use your clinical site for some experience. Have you taken care of the elderly before? e.g Grandparents? Use them as your experience too. Good luck:up:

I agree with many here i would never work as a CNA if all i was paid was 8 bucks an hour.. I used to make 8.75 working in activities back in high school. It doesnt make me less passionate about nursing but i have tuition and other expenses. My advice dont stop applying youll find a better offer my first CNA job i started at 12 and now 3 months after i switched jobs to a hospital at 15 plus 1 hr differential for pms plus 1 more on weekends. Aim high always! And don't pass an opportunity to make more money! everyone has expenses and some unfortunately can be unexpected. Working for **** pay does not make you a better CNA

Sounds about right, with experience and other certifications you will earn more.

Only for people working on federal government contracts.

Good luck. I am concerned about this topic too. I will be doing my cna next month in the bronx and as I was looking for jobs just to see what my options are I realized that as an entry level I won't be getting much respect. Especially a lot of places are looking for experience even agencies. If you find anything, please let me know.

Help with what? if you got no experience the smart thing to do is take the bloody job. People are just too picky. You got nothing to bargain with and there are lots of CNA's on the market so employers can shop around. It really makes no sense spending thousands of dollars to move just to earn 2 dollars more. As with any job field starting out if you can be hired by 1 employer and stick it out 3-6 months you just keep applying to other places while you work chances are you will be offered more. Earn your 1 year experience then you can start yelling for help.

$8/hr in New York is way too low. Apply everywhere, even hospitals. Many many CNA's at my facility were hired with zero experience. Don't sell yourself short. Best of luck.
HI, which facility are you located and what's the starting pay for CNA? Do PCTs get paid more? Thanks :)

That's how much I was making in CO. Which is why I had to quit. I was working 2-10pm. My husband would watch our kids in the evening. But he got laid off and started driving a truck. I couldn't afford childcare.

Does anyone know how much Tennessee CNA's start off in hospitals? Or PCT's?
