i thought this would be a great place for us to ask each other questions and help each other out with concerns, school work etc... during the next year.
please feel free to join if you are starting your lpn program this fall. :balloons:
my name is michelle, i'm 30 and i live in virginia. i'm looking forward to meeting all of you.
My name is Crissy , I am 34 and I am starting the program in Aug. I live in Ohio and I have 2 kids. My orientation is also in June. I think this is a great idea to help each other get through what I have heard may be the toughest year of my life. :chair:
you'll do great, i'm sure. i'll keep my fingers crossed for ya!~ i'd tell ya to break a leg, but i guess since this is ns i'll just say break a thermometer!
:melody:
okay everyone, please say a prayer for me. tomorrow is my first day of ns! just hope tomorrow is also not my last day of ns! yikes!!
For real. I am so disenchanted with it right now. :uhoh21: :chair: I can do the math, (though it is somewhat of a struggle for me.):imbar But I can do it. I sat here last night and did about a million conversions, yay!~ However get to lab today and on the quiz, I again did not finish over half of it and was struggling with what little I did answer. This is a big problem. It could keep me from passing pharmacology. The instructor only gives you about 25-30 min to do 50 problems and my brain just does not want to compute that fast. (that may be the norm, I dunno) I NEVER finish the quizzes with this particular instructor.
However, I am not having any problems in any other classes.
So I've been trying to do some critical thinking as tho why this is happening. Ok on my NET scores it showed that I'm way above average in most areas, with math being the weakest one, but still above average. But one flawed character was that my test taking style is frustrational. Maybe that is where the problem lies. It's not "math" per se that is the root of the problem, it's that I know I'm weak in it and combine that with apparent "frustrational testing skills" and voila, a problem that doth make!:stone
I'm gonna make an appointment with the student success center tomorrow and see if I can get math tutoring and test taking skill help. Because if I can not break this pattern, I'm afraid I will not pass pharmacology. Sorry for the vent. I thought maybe as fellow lpn/lvn clubbers, maybe someone here could relate, have some advice etc.:)

thanks! you put a smile on my face re: the thermometer! first day wasn't so bad after all -- guess it's mostly the
fear of the unknown!

Melanie:
Your dilemma reminds me of a similar situation that good friend of mine went through. She was a very intelligent person, but when she had to take a test (especially in math and sciences) she struggled. After speaking with the counselors at school about her issue, it was learned that she had a form of test anxiety.
After her test anxiety was diagnosed (through the school) she was allowed to take tests in a quiet room, separate from the rest of the class, and allowed an unstructured amount of time to complete the tests. Once that was put in place, her test grades were excellent.
Don't know if this helps, but it may be something you would want to consider/explore.
thanks for the info, it is definitely something to think about. :)

:balloons: Hi All,
I just want to say I wsh you all the best of luck!!! I have been an LPN for 4 years now, wow how time flies!, I work in a hospital and I really do love my job. I graduated when I was 30 and I have 3 teens, a soon to be 13, 14 and 16 1/2 yr old. Yes it is a challenge, esp. if you have a family and work but if you want it enough you will do it! I would say you will trully start learning, well making the connections to what you have learned in school after you get out in the workplace. Yes, school will be overwhelming at times and you may get sick of studying, sick of your teachers, your classmates and just like anything else in life school will have its ups and downs. But, If you are really love to help people and are compassionate, you will glad you became a nurse. Being a nurse is hard work and does require you to use so many different skills, analytical, diplomacy, tact, and so many more as you will learn. Nursing is so ingrained into me I could not think of being anything else. It is who I am....and believe me it is hard at times but God I LOVE IT, even on some of my worst nights! A career in nursing will toughen you up too, I remember I use to take everything so personally and had a hard time speaking up now I have to learned to let things slide off my back and I have learned to become a true patient advocate. And I work with some amazing nurses who have taught me so much. This may be a little much for all of you right now but I wanted to all you "WELCOME TO NURSING" as one of my favorite instructors would say to us each day! or to make a point of how tough nursing can be. Hey if anyone wants to email me feel free, we all here to help each other.
