Chemistry 2006/ 2007 Club***

I am starting Chem II this semester. Anyone want to start a club???

My professor non chalantly eluded to the fact some chem exam questions may have 'distracters'...........Look at this problem. (stoichiometry)

How many moles of CO2 can be produced by the complete combustion of 3.1 moles C2H6?

2 C2H6 + 7 O2 -------------> 4 CO2 + 6 H2O

Is the term complete combustion a distracter? Because it definitely distracts me! The actual working out of the problem has nothing do to with wether it a complete combustion or not,.............because similar problems will say complete reaction or complete combustion or just 'reaction'

But I'll look at it initially and go 'complete combustion'? now what does that change?

Yes I agree, just set up the ratios. 2 mol of C2H6 will give you 4 mol CO2.

Why say complete combustion? Well, for one thing, we don't know from just looking at this what the limiting agent is... that is, if we have enough O2. Saying complete combustion tells us that enough O2 was present to burn all the ethane.

Complete combustion means that there is not incomplete combustion which would leaving CO + CO2 + H20 as products

I'm not sure I understand. The chemical equation shows CO2 and H2O as products, but it's telling her it's complete?

hi. i'm new and will be starting intro. to chem on 5/9/06. would love to be a part of the study group! feel free to email me and/or post. i'll be checking in frequently. hope we can all help each other thru this icky course. lol

hi laurette, chemistry is not as bad as you think, enter the course with confidence and you will make it.

i am only a week away from my final exams and honeslty it's been very good for me because i kept a positive attitude about it and never allowed it to intimidate me.

i wish you luck!

My basic chemistry class starts about June 5 '06. An online chemistry study club may be helpful.

PH question

If you an acidic solution that has a pH of 1 and you add a basic solution that has a pH of 1 they would neutralize right? So would the pH of the combined solutions be 7 or 0?

TIA!

I had my 3rd test last night for Chemistry. The test consisted of polymers, acids, basis, balancing chemical equations. I did all the problems that I knew and then I drew a blank on four out of the thirty-five. As I a prayed for the answers to come to me the fire alarm went off. My prof. looked out the hall and there was smoke. Yes a FIRE during my test!!!!!!! It ended up we had to finish the test in the parking lot. By this point there were only five students left. My prof. ended up giving us some 'clues' to the problems we where having difficulty with. How strange is this????? I am just glad it is over. Two weeks till my Chem Final.

Your question makes no sense. There's no such thing as a "basic" solution with a PH of 1. Anything with a PH of LESS than 7 is generally considered acidic. Basic is above 7.

Ooops... sorry I meant neutralized. I had a question on an assignment I turned in tonight. I can't remember exactly how the question was phrased...it was a dilution question. But I was able to get the answer. Thanks though!

I think that sounds good to me. I took CHEM 101 on-line and got an A, but now I'm taking CHEM 110 (Intro To Chem), which is 101 AND 102 combined because they weren't offering CHEM 102 online. But I still think a club sounds great!

Good job on the test. I wish our professor would give us hints to the problems. I'm finishing the pre-req chem today with the final and I start the "real" chemistry this summer in 2 weeks! I just want this class to be over.
