We were informed today that when we finish school the format for the nclex will be fill in the blank---WTF?????

I am so upset. The instructor said it would be a computerized fill in the blank and that spelling would count b/c of using the computer! :(

I probably should quit now! Why are they changing it? Does anyone know if this is definitely real??

Thanks for letting me vent, I don't know if I can handle all this or not.

personally, I have not heard this. I just took NCLEX this year and they already changed the format this year. They added fill in teh blank answer choices, but i only got 2 questions like that out of 265 questions; the rest were MC. I wouldn't sweat it; u can go to nclex.com or ncsbn.org to check out information about the boards. By the way, when do you graduate? And don't quit nursing b/c of a change in test format.

I got the info from my program about he new testing. I am quoting the handout they gave us form Kaplan.

"Psychosocial Integrity and Health Promotion (OB) will be dereased by 50% while increasing empahasis on Management of Care and Pharmacology.

The new blue brint will be implemented April, 1 2004.

Alternative item types will continue and include "select all that apply," "fill in the blank" calculation and prioritizing, and "identify the area" graphic questions.

Retakes: The waiting period has been reduced from 91 days to 45 days efective August 2003."

I tried to find the info on the kaplan website, but no luck. Here is the web address if you want to look. http://www.kaplannursing.com

We also got examples of all the new types of questions they will ask. It has not totally changed, just added some new types of questions.

Good Luck, maybe someone else can give you more info.

I have also been told the same thing.:o I heard that some of the questions will be fill in the blank (mostly drug dosages), but there will still be some multiple choice.

ACtually I took NCLEX this past summer and failed, but I had to wait 91 days until I took it again (and passed) I have not heard of that rule going into effect this past August. I don't think its beneficial anyway to take NCLEX after 45 days again- you will not be ready that soon after taking it the first time. Trust me!

The alternative type questions (ie. fill in's, etc.) will not make up the whole exam so you will be fine. I found the statistic somewhere on the NCSBN's website....

I cannot understand your anger. The change in format is not a change for you, as you have never taken the test before. If this frustrates you to be point of quitting, maybe you should rethink your career choice. Nursing is FULL of changes, many of which will make no sense to you. You will stroke out worrying about things like that. Just think of it as a loop you have to jump thru to get what you want (assuming you really want it). I am hoping you are just tired because it is the end of the semester. I was EXHAUSTED by graduation and nearly got sick over all the deadlines, etc. Guess what? It all happened anyway, whether I worried or not.

I will graduate in July from the LPN classes and next June from the ADN program.

Thanks everyone! I understood that it would all be that way, so I guess I just blew a gasket over nothing.

I would never quit, but this is only my 2nd sem. and I am so stressed out.

Thanks again everyone. I really do want this. I have wanted it for a long time. I know deep down that I can do this--- sometimes I just freak out b/w school, kids, work, and everything else going on.

Thanks for listening everyone. You are all a very special group of people. :kiss

The whole test will not be multiple choice, but it will be a mixture of different types like mentioned above.

And Chrissy.. They are lowering it from 91days to 45days.. Which I think is a good thing... 3months is way to long to have to wait to take it again..

3 months is a long time to have to take it again, I do agree. But when I failed it the 1st time this past July, I was so disapointed after studying so hard that I didn't study for a while. I'm just saying that 45 days is not much time to study for such a BIG exam. But some people may think its a great thing; I was just not ready to face the exam that soon again.

I wouldn't get too overly worried about the new nclex format. You have been studying all along with the NCLEX style questions and you realize that these questions aren't that obvious. You have to know so much more information to answer these multiple choice questions. The alternative formats--fill-ins, priority, etc--just require you to be able to prioritize all that apply. Fill-ins are usually calculations and this isn't difficult. Don't panic. Go to NCSBN they explain the new format. It would be difficult to change the whole testing format in under 3 years since the alternative questions have been appearing (1st 75 questions, they put in "test questions" that are counted but used to see if questions is valid and realiable). Have faith in your abilities. You can do this. The lenght to wait for retake is something that is self-limiting. Even if you have to wait for 45 days to 91 days, you will know when you are ready to take this test. Everybody who is nursing school understands how hard they have worked to get through. Don't let this "big test" worry you. You will succeed.

I have job already lined up and will be working in Adolescent Intensive care unit in Georgia.
