Challenging Hospital Dress Code

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Please advise:

our hospital DON has announced that she wants us to change from our everyday scrubs to wearing matching scrubs (that also match our new bedspreads for our brand new unit opening in April). She thinks that we should be grateful for our multimillion dollar unit and purchase scrubs. I am angry that 1. We are being "forced"to decide between colors we don't like

2. we have to purchase these scrubs we don't like from a company they got "cheaper rates" for us (and for good reason...they are cheap/too thin) 3. We have to match bedspreads for crying out loud!! Also....no other unit has to match, I have frequently seen nurses/staff wearing clothing that hardly qualifies as scrubs....PJ's etc.

Does anyone have input/advice....thanks for your help :angryfire

I may be the only one here with this opinion, but this seems like much ado about nothing.

I don't understand why the uproar.

With all the pressing issues we face on a daily basis, is this worthy of all this attention?

I don't see why everyone is taking offense. Maybe they are just proud of the new unit and want to show it off, and they want everyone to be a part of that - maybe they're trying to build teamwork and unity.

You may not agree with their methods but hey, is this really such a big deal?

This really seems out of line:

Otherwise, "vote with your feet." Put in for a slot on another unit. Apply to another hospital and give your notice.

I can't imagine anybody quitting a job because of something so inane.

I would find it totally obnoxious to be forced to buy these ridiculous uniforms at my own expense. I think that's unreasonable. My hospital provides the matching uniforms that they require for OB. Med/Surg is allowed to wear any scrubs so we buy our own. But, to make a sudden dress code based on the subjective interior design tastes of the nurse manager, and then make the staff shell out for a bunch of new scrubs, is indeed unreasonable, IMO.

 no offense to anyone please....but, it is important to undertand that to some people it is and should be a big deal. if you don't like something....you don't eat it (right?), and if you don't agree with something.....you voice your opinion (unless you enjoy being stepped on :o ). the only way something is ever made seen or heard is by that one person who decided to stand up and let their voice be heard. you have 2 choices in life with everything, 1). forget about your feelings and opinions and just go with the current as a bystander.....or 2). stand up for what you believe (even if you are the only one standing).

besides....most of us come here to listen to each other and maybe withdraw some useful advice, or otherwise, give advise to another. everyone is entitled to their opinion, and some of us appreciate that. :balloons:

although, there are so many issues and other greater problems...it's those little ones that don't get done and later on come back to bite you! then all you can say is too late to cry over spilled milk now. :)

I would be mad if they were telling me where to spend my money!

What happens in a few years when they change colors or what happens when a different color bedspread from a different unit is placed on a bed? Do they need to get a matching nurse from a different unit? :rotfl:

I personally could live with the matching business. It might be a good icebreaker with some of the pts. Some of them might find it rather humorous. :chuckle But, making me pay for new scrubs is totally out of line! If this place is unionized I would suggest using that as a resource to force the hospital to pay for this.
