CERNER

Opinions about this daunting charting system that drives nurses to drink?

In my humble, non-biased opinion, I think Cerner is the biggest pile of charting poo that has ever hit electronic health records. I would much rather go back to hard copy charting than use that junk.

Context: I'm a travel nurse. I've been all over the country and used a few charting systems. My primary experience has been using Epic. It's called Epic for a reason. I wouldn't mind never seeing Cerner again.

On the flip side, I'll do my job no matter the software but that doesn't mean I can't grumble a little ;)

I'm a traveler too and also proficient with several EHRs. I agree with the above poster-Cerner is very quirky and notorious for double entries-hate it. Epic is much more intuitive and a far superior program overall!

Way too much charting in Cerner for Hospice and Palliative care. Hated it!!!!

I want a scribe, or one of those phones I can dictate into.

Cheers

Our clinic uses Cerner and has Dragon intergrated into the system. Some departments uses scribes, others, (mine included) all use Dragon

I prefer Epic, but to be fair the staff nurses who taught me Cerner as a traveler never really figured out how to use Cerner properly, so I never did either. And Epic can be customized to the point of uselessness lol.

I think it's the CHANGE that is hard. As a traveler,I learned many. Got 4 hours of training on any/ all of them. Hope you get more.

Cerner > >>>>> Meditech, the dot-matrix printer of EMRs

Yes, yes, YES! Meditech is the worst, most ridiculous, most user-unfriendly piece of 1980's nostalgia I've ever had the misfortune to use.

Is Meditech still DOS based?

Yes it is. You have no idea what you're looking at, where you just charted or what is due. It's horrible.

I use Epic, and build in Epic actually. It's really nice to use as an RN and as a provider. Not so much as an informaticist. I used Cerner in my NP clinicals and liked it because it was really easy to find information in when I had to formulate plans of care. Epic is wonderful but way too much information, and Meditech...well...I can't even.

No it's not. Not the greatest, but I can chart very efficiently on it.

Lol. They upgraded it quite a few times since then. The newest version is web-based. It still doesn't generate tasks like Cerner did, but it's not that bad.

Comparing with a friend who works at an Epic hospital, I still think Epic is better overall, but it's nice that on Meditech I can select everything I want to chart on and can chart on it all on one screen.

Using Cerner now, have used Epic and something else, maybe CareLink? early in the career.

EPIC was absolute bliss. Minimal time spent charting and clicking boxes, maximal time spent providing patient care. Can't say enough.

Cerner...I feel like I should be paid by the click, or get paid in computer mouses...(mice?). I legit spend half my shift clicking the boxes, and I only have TWO patients. I can't imagine clicking all those boxes for six or more patients! Plus it took me probably 2 years to have a good grasp of where to find info...cath lab reports, scanned EKGs, x rays, ECHO reports, social work/case mgmt notes...ALL IN DIFFERENT PLACES, and not intuitive ones. I could go on, but thinking about this during down time is giving me hypertension

CERNER? I thought Epic was our new overlord now.

You must be working with the upgraded version then. In my per diem job they still use the DOS version and it's hideous. You can't use a mouse with it and can only enter letters to get into the million different menus that are completely non-intuitive. I hate it
