CEN as a new grad ABSN?

Specialties Emergency

Published

Hey all;

I graduated in August from an ABSN program, and I passed NCLEX a few weeks ago. For my last semester, I completed a 216 hour preceptorship/transition to practice in a very busy ER. I loved the work, I loved the environment, and I really would like to work in an ER ASAP.

With that being said, the time that our program graduates is less than optimal, as most new grad programs already selected their candidates. Still, I've knocked out my PALS, ACLS, and BLS renewal, and I'm working on my NIHSS (whenever their ancient servers allow me to complete more than one segment at a time, of course -_-)

My question is this: is it worth trying to get my CEN now? Will it look like "hey, this guy is motivated and a self-starter" or will it look like "this guy is a pretentious prick and way too much of a go-getter"? To that end, since I already graduated from an ABSN program, I am slightly worried that too much, too fast will give a negatively overzealous impression.

Just wondering all y'all's perspective on things :)

Thanks for your feedback and time!

I guess I must be one of those "snowflakes" then.

Do you plan on hysterically responding to people who disagree with you with responses such as "I hope you're never my nurse", "you must be a terrible nurse", " you people are so meeeeaaaannnn", " I told you nurses eat their young", "you are all old and bitter", "I'm never coming back to this site again" (also known as an internet flounce). If not then she wasn't referring to you.

To distill it down further she was referring to people who have hissy fits when people here don't molly-coddle and agree with whatever hair-brained notion they come up with and resort to name calling and threats. She was NOT referring to someone who simply disagrees.

Well I hope you're never my nurse because you're mean!

;) :roflmao:

My apologies but I find the term "snowflakes" to be antagonistic especially given its continuous use in political arguments these days.

Specializes in NICU, ICU, PICU, Academia.

My screen name refers to a 70s era Chrysler automobile ad. I'm actually nice and try to be helpful by sharing my experiences here.

Now this roof is something to behold

Reptilian vinyl, colored gold

You can get that when you buy the rest, no extra charge

:lol2:

Just felt like laughing, I guess. "I'm actually nice..." was pretty funny too.

The really ironic part is that my late father sold cars his entire adult life. Buicks.

Regarding your name, I always thought about Mean Joe Green and the Coca-Cola commercial! Lol.

Im actually old enough to remember that commercial! ;-) LOL

Specializes in ER.

It doesn't really matter to be honest. It is expensive if you don't study enough. 230 for the initial test if you join ENA. I never needed it although I am getting it now for my resume. You can get CEN after your name.

Specializes in ER, ICU.

I would say the latter not the former. Go for it. You are clearly a go-getter, just embrace it.
