Hello eveyone,
I 've passed NCLEX last January and have contract with hospital on my hand. But I can't pass spoken section on Toefl and hospital representative sayed they won't fill in I-140 and will wait when i pass.
I recieved 97 points on Toefl and only 22 poins on spoken section twice (26 out of 30 is required). Now I'm waiting for the 3 test results but i'm not sure i've passed.
Does anyone have the same problem? Or how long did it take for you to pass spoken exam? And may be next time i should take IELTS. Is it easier?
Thank you.

For a minute there I thought I was the only one with this problem.
I like you have passed the nclex, sat Toefl IBT x2 had scores of 98/97 respectively but failed Speaking with 22/24.
I have decided to give TOEFL IBT a third try this Satrurday 23rd,and hope I am successful if not I will move to do the IELTS.
What I have done differently is joined an English class.
Let me know the results.

I don't know how hard the TOEFL iBT is but the only advice that I can give you guys is to speak the english language as frequently as possible.

I only recommend the IELTS series as you have a human in front of you that is testing you and you are not talking to a machine.
Suggest that you view as many American movies as possible, and speak English 100% of the time. I am sure that it may get difficult at times but you need to learn to think in English all of the time, and not translate everything into your language first.
Thank you for advice,
I'll follow them and hope finally i'll pass. I joined english club too and i'll try to apply for UK visa. If could live there for a while and practice english.I don't think i need special english course I just need to speak to someone.
Thanks again.

If you have the option, I suggest that you take IELTS instead of TOEFL IBT.
I thank Suzanne4 for giving me this advice; I wss able to take the TSE before and didn't pass. Since then, I've been encouraging nurses who plan of moving/working in the USA to take the IELTS series. IELTS gives you more flexible options(recognized the AU, Europe, etc.) and you have higher chances of passing it.
God bless!
Thank you for advice. I'll definetly take IELTS next time.
How much time did it take for you to prepare and pass spoken section?
As for me, 6 months passed since NCLEX.

Dear jrhyle.
I have the same proble as the other nurses in this thread; I applied for the VSC becauseonly items letf to be send were initial license from home country and TOEFL which I believed I had passed ( got 99), but they want us to have 26 in Speaking portion.
The fact is that I just took it for the yhird time in one year frame time, and belive me I am sssooo scare of taken any English test at this point.
Therefore my question is, can you tell me some reasons the IELTS is less painful? I ask this question because I have studied English in the USA and I think IELTS uses spelling from Englan; am I correct or am I misunderstanding.
my last speaking score in TOEFL was 23:( with 89 overall. To be more specific; the IELTS has the same sections and the speaking is NOT infront of a computer? ; so the person is there?
Can anybody give me a short description ( of course; no details) Is it helpull to buy their (IELTS) practice books?
Thanks

Just use the spelling in your essay consistently(don't mix British spelling with American spelling). Speaking section is in front of a person, not a recorder. I passed IELTS by myself and I'm not even comfortable with English,it's my third language. I purchased books with sample IELTS test question to be familiar with the type of questions presented so that i'll know how to answer it.
IELTS is using internationally accepted English.
However, some sections that have speakers(listening) may require you to be familiar with the variations of English accents. Also, increase your vocabulary/terms used in other English variations, but don't worry these things are rarely used. International English is widely used.
