Hello everyone! I am about to start classes for Practical Nursing and I want to be sure that I know where to apply for jobs. Can I apply to positions that are for labor n delivery or anything with babies?
Private duty pediatric nursing but no guarantee of infant cases.
Very few hospitals will hire LPN's in an acute care nurse role due to limitations on scope of practice, there are a few states where it is possible but even as an RN, L&D is a popular department for applicants and there is much competition for a low turn over department.
My former classmate just got hired to a L/D unit. She's a LPN. She lucked out when we graduated and got hired as MDS coordinator. She left there after two years and got a job in med surg. She got to float to L/D one night about three months ago. The charge nurse loved her and asked her to transfer. 4 years later, just got her dream spot.
The only way to find out if these jobs exist is to enquire. Ask the hospitals in your area that deliver babies. It would be a shame to graduate from a program and then find out you need more schooling to do what you really want to do.
In my area, the only OB-related jobs are in MD practices. Would that be an option for you? If you are certain you want to be in L&D some day you could do the LPN program; get a job in an OB office that is owned by a hospital system, then do a bridge program to become an RN. You would have an advantage applying for jobs because you would already be an employee of the hospital system.
