Good evening!!! I know where I live at LPN's who are not grandfathered in in the hospital are no longer able to be accepted inside the hospital setting in my area. Where I live they only allow RN's in the hospital nursery, L&D, antepartum, and maternal surgical suites. They will hire LPN's anymore :( I was an LPN for 6 years before becoming a RN and I can tell you that I worked in the OBGYN office and I absolutely loved it!!! I worked there for 5 years and It was the best field I have ever worked in. OBGYN has my heart and I will definitely be going to get my WHCNP when I am done with my MSN. I think I would prefer the OBGYN office over L&D! Once you get your LPN you will be able to find an OBGYN office to hire you! You will absolutely love it! Good luck to you :)

Thanks everyone! I think I'm going to try and pursue in the area where I want to be and see what happens. I do plan on advancing my career once I get my foot in the door.

Well, I would say that yes, sure you can apply for a job in those areas. While you are in school you'll learn about your scope of practice. Each state has it's own. Some are very restrictive and some are not. Your state board of nursing may have summaries of what types of jobs LPNs can work in there.

Then you need to consider what your area's employers do as a matter of policy. "Can work in" doesn't always translate to "will be hired to work in" as many people have said. Now that the supply of new grads has risen sharply in the last 5-7 years your chances are not good in many cases.

Hopefully there are other areas you are interested in, because nursing school is an awful lot of work to do and hands on training in numerous areas if you are banking on employment in just one very popular specialty.

Best wishes to you!

Yes I think it depends on your area, here they only hire RNs

I'm wonder if the hospital in San Antonio the one poster talked about grandfathered in the LVNs. If not, then someone is moving! Haha!
