CA NCLEX without SSN, can we really ask for an extension to the BON?

Hello everyone! Does anybody here whose in the same predicament with me. My CA NCLEX is about to expire on April 2008 and until then, I doubt I can give my SSN since retrogression has damper on things...

I've read someone before who had asked the CA BON for an extension and she was given twice. Has anyone experienced this?

I've talked to my lawyer about this problem and she told me that they will call the CA BON to ask for an extension...

IS it really possible? any inputs on this? thank you so much!

If I have already taken the CGFNS exam, that's different from the CES right? Thanks very much.....wow I've been waiting & the agency didn't even tell us that we actually need CES, I could've done that a long time ago.

If I may cut in a bit. First of all, do not blame anything yet on your agency. Doing nothing that is not suppose to be done yet is not a short coming on their part.

You still have lots of time before the SSN req't deadline that CA BRN is asking for. Yours is not even due too expire until Oct. 2009, so it is not wise to apply for a licensure to another State this early. CA BRN may not even entertain a request for the 1 year extension at this point as many have reported already.

It is not wise to apply for another licensure in another State this early for you as most will still need a SSN for renewal. You will just be creating another scenario of not having the capability to renew a licensure w/o the SSN. There is no guarantee you will be in the US w/in 5 years base on the previous Visa bulletins (unless a legislation to bring back the Schedule A category materializes or the EB3 category leaps forward). It would be better if you do this only about more or less 6 mos. before it will actually expire. Add a couple more months for insurance if you will be picking a State such as NY that has a history of long processing for foreign educated nurses.

And if I'm not mistaken Florida is one of those States that also do not give licenses w/o a SSN. If this is the case, this is another reason not to do anything yet. It wouldn't make a difference. You have to double check their req'ts out yourself on their website and the instructions for endorsing/applying for licensure to them. All of the State BON/BRN's websites are in www.NCSBN.org as we have posted in our stickies here and in the Philippine forum.

Finally, you have no guarantees that your agency will indeed be able to give you a job in Florida. Finding someone to petition you is no guarantee. There have been many reports of people being petitioned since 2005 and if their agency did their job, they are suppose to be in the US even before retrogression started in Nov. 2006. So, if you are one of those or your agency are one of those that have nurses like those then you have no guarantee you can can be in the US at all and regardless if there is retrogression or not. Remember, those who have PDs of 2005 and still on their home country have their petitions filed when it was the good times when there is still the Schedule A and no retrogression. If they weren't able to process their clients back then, what more now and esp. for clients that only have their petitions filed in 2006 and 2007.

just in case...

what state BON would you suggest foreign nurses w/o SSN who passed the CA nclex-rn apply to as fallback/second choice? the ones where renewal does not require SSN or other requirements like minimum hrs of RN experience, etc?

much love :balloons: and happy new year!

There is no perfect state, each has some requirements that need tobe met. Most have a requirement of continuing education hours, and most require the SSN# to renew even if it was not required for initial licensure.

If you are not in the last six months of the three years, you should not be considering doing anything at all at this point, not even thinking ahead as rules and requirements are always changing.

Thanks for the responses suzanne, lawrence & silverdragon!

The state of CA is is tough shape. They are talking about cutting down office hours. That is going to extend the time on everything.

I know many a nurse who has driven to the state office the renew their license because time expired. That is always an option.

so what could this mean?

You can ask, you have nothing to loose. I would think granting an extension to a person who doesn't even live in the country, never mind state would be low priority. No harm asking and check the board for other suggestions.

hi! i'd like to know if it's advisable if i also send an email to the license renewal department? or is it enough that i sent them a letter. thanks!

I just want to ask, what if you didn't do anything about the Ca nclex 3 year letter without SSN? are you really going to take the exam again when you re-apply by examination? won't pearson vue have like a record that you are passed and can be forwarded to Ca again when you re-apply? i was just wondering if this can be done since it's quoted that "Nclex don't expire and once you passed it you never have to take it again." unless this is only for US citizens. thanking in advance.

did yours expire already? they said that you can write them a letter to extend the 3-year grace period. or apply by reciprocity in another state. well, as the letter said, your file will be destroyed if they don't get your ssn in 3 years. so i'm assuming that you would have to take it again.
