BSN but want to take LPN/LVN exam. HELP!

Nursing Students NCLEX

Published

Hi Everyone!

I am a newbie here so I hope someone would welcome me with their warm knowledge about my dillema.

I studied and finished BSN abroad. and NO I AM NOT A BOARD PASSER. I am located in LA, California now. I want to challenge the NCLEX-PN exam while working on my paperworks for NCLEX-RN. I know it'll take time to pass the NCLEX-RN because waiting on the eligibility letter takes me forever. I want to be a licensed holder of anything(that is related to my course) so finding job will not be that pain in the buttt. Can anyone point me and tell me where should I start so I could take or challenge the NCLEX-PN exam? Challenging CNA exam was my first choice but someone in this forum advise me to take NCLEX-PN (LVN/LPN) instead. So I'm taking his advise. He didnt reply again so I thought posting another question would be helpful than waiting on his reply.

Please tell me where to start. I am planning to call the BRN regarding this but I want to do my own research first.

What are the papers I'm going to need to challenge the NCLEX-PN exam?

Is being an LPN/LVN is better that being a CNA?

I'm a BSN so do I need to take classes or training still?

Thank you for reading my post. Have a good one.

Why would you still want to do NCLEX-PN if your application for NCLEX-RN has gone through... contrary to popular belief the PN exam is not easy. so if you were looking for an easy way out, that is not it. Just study hard and go through with the NCLEX-RN.[/quote']

Not to mention that you probably won't find a job "like that" as an LPN if that is what you're planning on doing (working as an LPN until you can take the NCLEX-RN), unless you already have something set up. As ohiostudent'11 mentioned, the NCLEX-PN is not easy. Why would you want to put yourself through the NCLEX twice? Taking the NCLEX-RN once was more than enough for me and I'm glad I don't have to do that ever again.

You need to ask in the Philippines International Forum many are in your shoes. To work in the US you need a green card or a ss #. There is no way to bypass this law.

This person is married to an American so ssn is not an issue. Why not apply at a hospital as a unit clerk, it would get you experience in the us systems. No need for cna, and would provide reference for the ti e when you pass you test.

in my experience pn boards were much easier to me than rn boards....but thats just my experience. :o

it's the opposite for me. rn boards were much easier to me than lpn boards. i also finished earlier in nclex-rn due to having 75 qs (minimum) only compared to 85 qs (minimum) for the nclex-pn.

no. i wasnt hurt. like i said i'm a newbie here just didn't expect the answer to be unprofessional since all of us here are educated.

i get it. so the process is just the same. okay. i'm

reviewing my nclex rn now, just thought about taking another exam.

no, they were not being unprofessional. they are just curious why a bsn graduate would take the nclex-pn when your nclex-rn is already processing. i know several filipinos who did this as a "back-up" plan just in case they were unable to pass the nclex-rn. some eventually passed the nclex-rn and became registered nurses (rn) and some remained licensed practical nurses (lpn) due to failing the nclex-rn several times.

in new jersey, it would take the same amount of time and money to process both nclex-rn and nclex-pn. so there is no point of "doing" the nclex-pn while waiting for att (authorization to test) for the nclex-rn. i don't know about california though as you guys have separate board of nursing for lpn/lvn and rn.

i wish you luck kababayan (fellow countryman)!

rn nclex easier then lpn---that is great news. i zipped through the lpn nclex and hit the submit button at question 75. i was out of the testing center in no time..then i started to worry. i sweated it out till i got notification i passed.

I guess some people cannot understand why BSN grads want to take the LPN/LVN boards...

I waited 6 months for my eligibility from the CA Board since they're requesting new requirements for BSNs who graduated abroad, or maybe just Philippine grads (I'm not sure). I've declined job opportunities because of the wait, plus I did not apply for an interim permit. Last week, I found out I failed my NCLEX-RN exam... Now, I want to take the LPN/LVN exam to give myself a chance at that while I prepare for taking the NCLEX-RN exam again sometime soon.

Having a BSN degree and becoming an LPN/LVN isn't really stepping down of a pedestal. Us Filipinos are very humble. We don't let our titles classify and describe who we are. As a degree holder, it doesn't matter if I work a blue collar job as long as it preserves my integrity, puts food on the table and pays for bills. Now I'm working as a temp, earning $8.75/hour. It is better than nothing but it would be so much better if I pass the LVN/LPN exam, get a job as that and then work my way again to take the NCLEX - RN.

There's nothing wrong with it... It's called steering your life :)

check with the lvn/psych tech board. you can challenge the lvn nclex exam, but you must have your school fill out the paperwork. the board requires a certain amount of education as well as a certain amount of document hours in each didactic & clinical class. further, you must have a certain amount of internship hours working as a student intern after you finish the class. applying for the lvn license in ca is not as simple as just filling out a form and sending it in. contact them to see if you are eligible and what you are required to submit.

in the meantime, you qualify for the certified nursing assistant (cna) test, based on your education/experience. as a cna, you would earn between $9-14 depending on where you work---better than the $8.75 you mentioned.

Hi quebby224

I have read your post about challenging an LVN exam and I think we have the same problem, but the difference is your RN graduate, but me not yet. So I think if you already solve your problem and please I really need your advise too. So here is my problem. I'm a nursing student outside US, I have finished up to 3rd year and need only 1year to finish RN. But I need to look for a job first here to finish my course. And can i ask if I can also challenge the LVN exam?.I want to know if you were able to challenge the LVN exam???

Thanks...

Need help!! I'm a license nurse in the Phils, applied for NCLEX-RN in CA but hve a problem with concurrency so i asked CABRN to send copies of my documents at BVNPT & now i'm confused if i still needed to send the "record of nursing program" in my school because thats one of the requirements of BVNPT.. Any help will be appreciated.. Hve a good day to all.. God bless
