The push is for ADN nurses to go back and earn a higher degree in order to help protect and save lives is before us today. Threats of our careers being over if we do not advance our degrees. How about this concept. Police officers are killing innocent people and are violating laws themselves on a daily basis. If you higher ups are so concerned about the public health and safety, why are police officers not being required to have degrees themselves? They do not even have a degree and are ruining people lives and killing others. How about start with them and leave us innocent nurses alone. Make police officers go to college or else...pressure them as we have been pressured!

Well, a lot of police departments do require a college degree but it is not a nationwide standard.
The most important thing to assess is whether there are studies supportive of degreed officers being less likely to engage in inappropriate violence. I'm a big proponent of higher education but having a degree is not the automatic answer to every issue.
Actually, studies have shown that there is no quantifiable difference in quality or safety between those with the Magnet credential and those without. - See more at: 400 Bad Request

Police officers are not forcing you to get an advanced degree, your admistration is. Don't blame them and do not speak negatively of them. They put their lives on the line to protect our community, just like you.
also, I noticed you posted about "BSN being BS" and then placing blame on physicians. Once again, I can see why you would be frustrated but displacing your frustration onto other occupations involving saving lives is very inappropriate.

There is no vast unseen authority that "makes" anybody do anything. I'm sorry you are so unhappy about the perceived value of your education, though, and you certainly will offend a lot of people with your disparaging generalization about police officers. Sounds almost intentional.

What in heck did I just read?
OP, I understand some of the frustration from ADN nurses about the push for the BSN. I work with some amazing nurses who hold an ADN who can run circles around me and kick my ass in nursing skills/assessment/technique. But it looks like you've mentioned this topic before (see above).
But seriously? Your attitude about the police and your disparaging generalizations about them off killing loads of people on a daily basis is appalling and disturbing. And wrong.

Simple fact. It is an employers market. If they prefer BSNs and hire them in preference to diploma and ADNs, that is how it is.

BSN degrees are not needed to assist in life-saving measures. Many people fail to acknowledge that the exalted acute care hospital is not the only employer of RNs.
Other areas outside the hospital (e.g. home health, hospice, assisted living, jails, prisons, nursing homes, psychiatric facilities, rehab centers, methadone clinics, doctors offices, group homes, adult daycare, insurance companies, occupational health) tend to be very welcoming to associate degree nurses and diploma RNs.

Normally I don't engage posters like you, as it is usually a waste of my time.
That being said, I am absolutely fed up with people bashing police officers. These guys and gals go in to do a thankless job, work absurd hours and risk their lives to keep the non-criminal population safe. I'll hold off on sharing my opinion of your character and maturity level, as I know you as well as you know the thousands of police officers you've never met and would call for help the instant you felt unsafe.
However, I will point out that you are projecting your frustration at being encouraged to advance your education and that of our profession onto civil servants that don't deserve it.

A few weeks ago, I had one of the worst days ever. It seemed like everywhere I turned, someone was thanking my brothers and dad for their service (all military). I don't remember what the event was, some sort of military birthday or something along those lines. It was on facebook, in the street...the whole nine.
Later that day, after hearing "thank you for your service" all darn day, my best friend (who happens to be a former airman and currently a sheriff's deputy), was on his way to my home and decided to stop off at a local chicken joint (the one that is never open on Sundays;)), and place an order. I could hear the conversation since we were having a phone conversation. He asked me if I wanted anything and I said to get me the fruit cup. He proceeded to place the order and then inquired about whether they offered military and law enforcement discounts. Of course the answer was yes! I told him I changed my mind and that I didn't want a darn thing!
He asked, "what is your problem"? My response was that a nurse can't even get a discount to west hell, but you guys with your AK-47s and Glocks and 8mms and badges can get discounts on every corner! I was furious! Not at him; really not at the chicken joint, but just at the lack of appreciation of what we nurses go through after they've done such terrific jobs. It was like WWIII at my house, over a chicken joint's discounting practices. My anger was very misplaced. My poor friend...I ripped him a new one.
Later on that week, we were going out and we passed 'that' restaurant. I suggested he pull over, and he nearly floored the vehicle! "Not today"! he said. We laughed about it later on, but he still hasn't taken me back there.
I understand the OP's frustrations. I feel he's basically saying that there are bigger problems in the world today that the type of degree an RN possesses, which is true. I worry about my friend, too, because as a cop and as a person, I know he is one of the truly good guys who has never even fired his weapon accept to qualify every year. He forgave me for my lousy day, and I forgave him for being a cop.
