I used so many NCLEX style books through nursing school and they definitely helped. I would study the material really well so I knew if first. Then the day or two before the exams I would do hundreds of questions. Some of the books I would highly recommend are Med-Surg Success, Nursing Questions and Answers made Incredibly Easy!, and I would definitely buy this book Amazon.com: Saunders Comprehensive Review for the NCLEX-RN Examination (Saunders Comprehensive Review for Nclex-Rn) (9781416037088): Linda Anne Silvestri: Books It's a must have!

Im gonna have to say "Test Success". I read that over the summer before starting my program, and I think it helped out a lot.
I also want to add that some people see the title "Test Success" and think it's just a general test tips book.. but it's not, it's specifically written for nursing students and deals with nursing school/nclex style tests.
And it also has a lot of fundamentals info/practice questions in it as well. So that should really help you out a lot...

I hope that I am not off-base when I say that the previously mentioned books are great for nursing school material, but not so much for test taking strategies or the nursing school cuss words "critical thinking." Being able to effectively take and pass a nursing school test is tow-fold. 1) You need to have a fundamental knowledge of the material that is to be tested 2) You need to know how to think your way through the question and pick the best answer. This is the hardest part of nursing school tests. Its not black or white anymore. The first thing to remember is to READ THE QUESTION COMPLETELY!!! Too many times we see something familiar in the question and pick out the answer related to what we saw. Another good tactic is to look for key words such as always, never, etc and eliminate those answers. Heck I could go on forever on this....

Please do go on! I am in my 3rd semester and am still frustrated by the fact that I can narrow it down to "two" answers and keep picking the wrong one!
