Hi nurses, I have been very well behaved since I was a little girl. I have kept my original hair color, original eye color, and act like everyone else wanted me to be for a very long time. Since I became a nurse, I feel so comfortable as it is my nature to care for others. I love my job and I love how my residents react to me. Finally, after over 40 years of my life, I feel that I am myself after become a nurse. So I start to think that I may be able to be myself just a bit more but I am a bit concerned. I am concerned about how my residents will feel. So I thought that I should ask experienced nurses , your opinions. What do you think the residents will react to me if I dye my hair blue? I don't want to stand out but I love to see my hair blue. I don't want to shock them or confuse them since I work on a dementia unit. Should I go ahead or should I stay the look that the residents know? Would you please give me your opinions? Thank you :)

I would check with your management and see what they say about dying your hair an unnatural color, most places frown upon it but there are always exceptions. As for residents I would think the biggest problem you would have is being asked "why is your hair blue" several times a day lol

Agree with vertical. Check with your workplaces policies regarding this. A lot of places have policies about hair being worn above the collar, etc, the etc including it being a natural color.

If your dress code allows it, you work in an unusual place.

Even these wouldn't work at my hospital. They are still visible.

You can get away with subtle, possibly. My hair is naturally ash blonde and I put in lavender highlights. People didn't notice at first, until I was in a certain light. But it was very subtle.

I believe your best bet would be to look towards your dress code policy. I personally have medium purple hair and it isn't a problem where I work. I was sure to ask during the interview and was told that it wasn't a problem (my dress code policy confirms this). When I did my last school clinical rotation in an LTC the residents usually told me they liked my hair, and some didn't say anything at all about it. I work in a hospital that still hires LVN's if that makes any difference though.

Check with your companies policies. I worked at places that had "no un-natural" hair colors in there and would not tolerate that.

Most places wouldn't allow "unnatural" colors. But this is what surgical caps are for, among other things.

I like patch of peacock best! lol I used to do a burgundy purplish highlights when I was young. We do have a couple workers with unusual hair colors, one that does the blue thing occasionally and a couple others with a very, very red color, almost blood red. Some of the younger ones have visible tattoos and a stud on their tongue.
