Black and Job Hunting

Published

This may come off as more of a vent, but I see white new grads, some with less nursing and healthcare education than myself, getting jobs, some of them highly coveted specialties. Yet here I am, with a BSN, magna cum laude, three years health care experience, new grad getting pushed aside. I interview well, but apparently not good enough. I am starting to feel bitter and can't help but wonder if my race might play a role. Other black new grads (BSNs too) are having a much harder time getting a job than white new grads.

Any black nurses want to comment on this phenomenon?

I am starting to look outside of my state, but I am not sure where to start. Preferably a place that is diverse.

I'm sorry that we're in 2015 and still dealing with race issues. I am so grateful to live in California when it comes to matters like this. I'm sorry to the OP and hope she can find employment soon. Don't give up!

I can attest to that! California is not immune to racial undertones but you will more likely get hired simply because it is more diverse here. I am so sickened to still hear that this crap still goes on. My sister who is lives in Cincinnati deals with racial discrimination on the floor. She is constantly dealing with assumption of not being a team player because she does not discuss her private life. But one thing they can never say is that she is an unsafe practitioner. She takes great care with her patients. You would think that would suffice. Unfortunately, with certain names you automatically get put in the not to call back pile, but they rather lose out on hiring potentially good nurses because they can't deal with melanin. :mad:stupid!!!!!!!!

Attitude. The Gooch was correct.

over the years, the OP has had a big one around here. It's been her way or you got a verbal bashing.

Perhaps, management at her facility has observed something in her interactions with coworkers that they just felt was 'off'.

Entitlement, perhaps?

i've seen it before. Employed during uni, thought they were a shoe in for a job after graduation. Nope, management finally had a reason to get rid of a problem.

I kindof figured. Every person who uses their color as a scapegoat devalues the legitimate concerns of actual racial discrimination. It also comes off as incredibly...racist.

Do you live in California? What region?

I am a new graduate with a name on my resume that is for sure a black woman's name. However even with no experience I have gotten a call from almost every hospital I applied to. In fact I have already gotten 3 job offers. I'm not sure what is going on with you. Are you seeming interested in the position? Are you willing to do med surg? Smile a lot during interviews and let the interviewer lead It works every time for me.

Perthehaps, management at her facility has observed something in her interactions with coworkers that they just felt was 'off'.

Per TOS personal attacks are not permitted. Just letting you know.

There is a difference between being opinionated and having an attitude. In fact, all of my coworkers were shocked when they found out I didn't get the spot. I routinely pick up shifts, stayed late to help out others, and have been told that I am the hardest working aide they know.

So before you come into the thread with the claws, stop with the assumptions.

And anyone who ignores and dismisses racial inequality and pretends white privilege doesn't exist and that all black people are just a bunch of whiners who play victim is incredibly...racist.

Personal attacks aren't allowed, but wholesale condemnation of an entire racial group is fine. Gotcha.

Oh no. I agree. Every time someone has trouble finding a job etc. It is definitely because they are of a certain skin color. That has to be it. I mean, that's all employers look at. Name and race. Everyone knows that. I've been so terribly off base to suggest otherwise. Also, a racist boss is fine. It's It's a job. Who cares who they work for? I've been set right in my ways! I see the light!

That's not what she said. First of all, she prefaced her thread with this is a vent.

Your seeming anger and insistence that this is not occurring when black nurses and many white nurses say they have witnessed/experienced this is obtuse.

Where have all white people been condemned? Saying that white privilege exists doesn't condemn a group. I appreciate the white people who recognize racial inequality and don't minimize or dismiss the experience of people of color. Those ignorant enough to dismiss and ridicule the black experience, however, will be called out.
