Black and Job Hunting

Published

This may come off as more of a vent, but I see white new grads, some with less nursing and healthcare education than myself, getting jobs, some of them highly coveted specialties. Yet here I am, with a BSN, magna cum laude, three years health care experience, new grad getting pushed aside. I interview well, but apparently not good enough. I am starting to feel bitter and can't help but wonder if my race might play a role. Other black new grads (BSNs too) are having a much harder time getting a job than white new grads.

Any black nurses want to comment on this phenomenon?

I am starting to look outside of my state, but I am not sure where to start. Preferably a place that is diverse.

Shoot, where I live the local community health center discriminates against non spanish speaking people. I guess I should be mad because they have spanish speaking privilege.

Yes you should to be honest.

The good thing is race won't matter anymore.

the bad? If you do not speak Spanish, you will be out of a job, white OR black.

How does Spanish become the "unofficial" language without our consent?

Interesting. So in your area, someone who has a Latino heritage is not labeled - for my lack of a better word- as one if they appear 'white.' How do the Latinos feel about that?

Thank you for the clarity on DC; I knew the numbers were close and they were working on diversity. Glad to hear they made it.

Cameron Diaz is white going by appearance.

So is J Lopez.

Just because someone speaks Spanish,i do not see how that changes their race.

You and i agree on diversity being a mix of people and not 1 race dominating.

I love how the following cities are called diverse, yet there are always 1 predominate group:

Miami

Boston

LA

San Antonio

San Fran

When i look up there population stats,no group is represented equally.

Even in DC,Asians and hispanics are not represented as equally as whites and blacks.

Here is an essay written by a Caucasian female, Peggy McIntosh, that succinctly describes a concept that permeates American society.

White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack by Peggy McIntosh

I love this essay. It's just the truth and any white person who doesn't recognize their advantage (obtained by mere genetics) is diluted.

Admissions to universities is tricky and is not based solely on race. Maybe your sons essay was not good enough. Maybe his grades in math and science were not as strong as the 'black female'. No two applicants are the same. To say that her color is what got her in is simply based on assumptions and fuels the incorrect argument that whites are not being given a fare chance.

I read this and had to do a double and triple read! I was stunned that this poster would go after someone's child. Seriously!

"Maybe his grades in math and science were not as strong" What!! In this person's original post she spoke of the grades and GPA of her son and his black female friends as being pretty equal. If I remember correctly what was different was extra activities.

Nor, did the poster say color was the sole basis for admission, but it is a fact the Ivey's use Race as one of the items for consideration for entry. It has been well documented and easy to find on google.

Please cite the study that you are quoting about not getting hired with an ethnic sounding name.
Below you will find the link to the study that concluded that resumes with black-sounding names were less likely to receive callbacks. :)

I agree. I am so confused by bigtuna's response... I don't think they read it in entirety or something because the response made no sense. I had to read it a couple times too.

Here is the thing. You can LEARN Spanish, but you can't change your race.

Here is one final note...it is possible to disagree with another individual's point of view without being disagreeable. Although a heated debate is not going to change anyone's mind in the long run, we can all learn something new by envisioning ourselves in the other person's shoes, if only for one day.

I thank everyone who has contributed. :)
