Best Place to be as an RN

Published

Hello!

I am a pre-nursing student living in CA waiting for an acceptance letter to a nursing school. My SO and I have been contemplating moving out of CA because of how hard it is overall to get into a nursing school, finding a job, and living peacefully. We both have grown up in Northern CA and absolutely love the beauty and how everything is accessible (mountains for snowboarding, oceans, lake, deserts, forests, etc.)

Does anyone have an suggestions on other states/cities that would be a great place to be as an RN? Any suggestions on Canada? (He loves Canada!) I know this is probably a hard question to answer, but I would love some suggestions! We honestly have no idea where to even think about going. We would like a fun town/city for those in their 20s and a town/city that pays great for an RN and the cost of living evens out.

Thanks so much!!!

Victoria's nice - we have skiing, surfing, bush for trekking... You do have to go a way to hit desert, but the ones we have are fairly impressive. Okay, Australia's a little further from California than Canada is, but at least we, too, have ratios!

CA is the best place to be a RN, hands down IMO! Nashville, TN is fun & has jobs..maybe move there a year then move back? I started my career there & Vanderbilt is all young people and I really enjoyed living there. Good luck.

Steer clear of Michigan...our unemployment rate is like the second highest in the nation and our winters suck!

I would have to agree with getmethisnownurse! I love Nashville!! It is a fun, hip (but quaint) town and not too big. Skiing is not too far away in east TN. Vandy has a great medical center. Lots to do and even though you are in the South, still plenty of culture and art. Oh yeah- they still have jobs from what I know.

BTW... if I were single and without kids I would sooo be there myself.

Texas is getting a lot of Cali immigrants. Austin's a great place to live, but pays its nurses much lower than Dallas or Houston - probably start out in the low 20s/hr.

By the time you finish nursing school the job market might change significantly, depending on what happens with the economy and health care legislation. You might want to hold off on any major changess until you are closer to graduation.

I agree with bill4745. Although jobs are scarce right now, it might be three years before you're on the job market and hopefully, this recession will be over by then. If you're already in the Nor Cal area, you know about housing costs but in the SF Bay area, starting salaries are in the mid $30/hr range (once there are jobs) and within a few years, most RN's are making $45-50/hr. AND, Yosemite and Northstar are only 4 hrs away!!!!!:D:D:D
