BCIT January/April 2019 Intake Discussion

World Canada CA Programs

Published

Hey everyone, I know the BCIT January 2019 admission deadline is still a ways to go but I just wanted to know how many people are planning to apply, and also exchange some advice and questions with each other.

First off, I'd like to show you what I am applying with:

Highschool reqs

Precalc 12 - 99

CHEM 11 - 86

UNI reqs (UBC)

ENG112 - 74 (B)

PSYC101 - 72 (B)

CPSC - 86 (A)

STAT - 82 (A-)

A&P1 - TBD

A&P2 - TBD

I'm taking A&P in the Summer

experiences

- senior home (occupational therapy) volunteer

- first aid volunteer

- pharmacy assistant volunteer

Here are my questions:

Does BCIT determine your GPA based on your own university's grading scale? Or their own? And also, I'm not too sure about how to calculate GPA, since there are so many different scales online. Can anyone provide an accurate estimate of my GPA?

Does number of hours you've volunteered matter? Or do they consider it by months? Because I don't see a box where you input how many hours in the form.

How strong does my application look so far, and any advice?

thank you for this aaaibra, for this, I quickly looked up caregiver opportunities. Hopefully I can get a position before I apply to BCIT!

you can still apply before getting a position. I got the jobs 2 or 3 months after I applied and I emailed BCIT about how I could include that experience and they said I could submit a letter outlining my job responsibilities and they took that into consideration.

thank you for being so helpful!

also do libs 7001 and 7002! Im so thankful I did those because I have one less course to do next semester. It will save you so much stress in the program

Thanks for the info, aaaibra! Hopefully we get to experience that acceptance joy soon. (: When you say they factor in high GPA, is it cumulative GPA or just the academic foundations courses? I've been getting so many mixed answers, even from advisors. ):

Hi guys! :) I'm applying with:

High School

- Chemistry 11: 90%

- Pre-Calculus 11: 96%

Langara:

- English 1127: B+

- Biology 1190: A-

- Biology 1191: B

- Psychology 1115: A-

- General Education; French 1115: A

- Statistics 1124: A-

I don't have a degree, but I do have about 40+ credits toward another post-secondary degree? I also have over 400 hours of volunteering hours from two hospitals so I hope that will be okay LOL

Good luck to all of us!!!

I believe they mainly look at your pre req GPA. But at the same time if you did horribly in other courses or your degree then they would take that into account as well if it was between you and a similar applicant.

Hey guys! I've been reading through the comments and it seems there's some confusion on how GPA is looked at. This will be my second time applying and when I contacted them last year they said they looked at OVERALL GPA and not just pre Req GPA.

Overall I had a somewhat weak application due to my GPA and having only done 40 credits but I made it to the final round of applications due to work experience (caregiver). They take work experience into a lot of consideration.

Hi everyone, I just recently got offered a job to work as a caregiver for a 13 year old autistic child. I basically just pick him up after school to go to my house, and the job seems pretty laid back. He plays on his iPad and does his own thing most of the time. Do you guys think this is a good position, and may help me with my nursing application?

Hey Everyone!

So excited to finally apply! BCIT is my first choice. Be aware that they did recently change the curriculum as of April 2018 so school runs year-round, 3 semesters with 2-3 weeks off in between each semester.

I will be applying with a 3.75 CGPA, keeping my fingers crossed

I've completed 33.5 credits including LIBS 7021 & 7001 and also completed my Emergency Medical Responder (Paramedic) certificate at JIBC

Been volunteering at BC Children's Hospital in the Emergency Department and have 8 years serving experience (which I hear they like)

Really hoping to get in, just waiting on one transcript to come in and then i'll send in the application.

I am also surprised at how little amount of people have replied in the thread...hopefully it means less applicants!

Oh man, you're totally going to get in! You literally tick off all the boxes in each category that they look at!

Sigh, I hope so but they usually have 300+ applicants for 64 seats each intake so even with the lack of activity here, I have no clue if that's gonna be a true reflection of reality. ): Maybe the change with the A&P courses have caused a drop in applicants too but until the deadline, we really have no clue. ):

Hi aaaibra, thank you very much for sharing your experience with us! I'm thinking to take LIBS 7001 and 7021 in fall and have no clue what's the level of difficulty of these courses. Also, who did you take your classes with. I want to hear more about LIB7001 and know whether taking it online is a good idea. What was the format of the assignments and course outline altogether? Could you please give me some tips on how to get a job as a caregiver without related experience? I very much appreciate your response. I appreciate it if others share their thoughts too.

Hi jaem,

What do you mean by the change in A&P courses? According to the website, it needs to be done within the past 3 years, has that changed? Just want to make sure I'm not missing anything!
