Hey everyone, I know the BCIT January 2019 admission deadline is still a ways to go but I just wanted to know how many people are planning to apply, and also exchange some advice and questions with each other.
First off, I'd like to show you what I am applying with:
Highschool reqs
Precalc 12 - 99
CHEM 11 - 86
UNI reqs (UBC)
ENG112 - 74 (B)
PSYC101 - 72 (B)
CPSC - 86 (A)
STAT - 82 (A-)
A&P1 - TBD
A&P2 - TBD
I'm taking A&P in the Summer
experiences
- senior home (occupational therapy) volunteer
- first aid volunteer
- pharmacy assistant volunteer
Here are my questions:
Does BCIT determine your GPA based on your own university's grading scale? Or their own? And also, I'm not too sure about how to calculate GPA, since there are so many different scales online. Can anyone provide an accurate estimate of my GPA?
Does number of hours you've volunteered matter? Or do they consider it by months? Because I don't see a box where you input how many hours in the form.
How strong does my application look so far, and any advice?
Hey guys!! I am currently in the BCIT April intake and its so refreshing to see how many people are working hard to get in. My biggest advice would be to not only do the pre reqs but doing other courses to gain credits. Most get in with degrees that is true. I had only 47 credits but got in. What also factored in me getting in was working as a caregiver at two companies, having a high GPA, and even though they say they don't count volunteer experience in the point system they do consider it... if they have two similar applicants, your volunteering will be what sets you apart and gets you in. I lied, my biggest advice is to keep working hard to get in. I got in on my second try and I am so thankful I did. I had to work so much harder and if I got in with the minimal experience i had the first time I would not have survived the program. Because of my work experience and extra post secondary experience I feel more prepared for the program. So even if you don't get in the first time, keep working to improve. They will take into account previous applications and note down how much you improved. DONT GIVE UP!!! It is very competitive but completely possible to get in if you truly want it and work hard for it. It is so rewarding receiving your acceptance and I think of that moment often :)
I worked for nurse next door and Spectrum Society for community Living. I recommend spectrum out of the two, I learned how to administer meds, do bed baths, bathe clients in tubs, feed and administer meds with clients that had G tubes, learned how to use wheelchairs and manual sealing lifts etc. They trained me for all of that on the job, I was soooo thankful when I found it! Such an amazing company, and you are caring for older adults with developmental experience. You could not gain better experience, I highly recommend!
