Hey everyone, I know the BCIT January 2019 admission deadline is still a ways to go but I just wanted to know how many people are planning to apply, and also exchange some advice and questions with each other.
First off, I'd like to show you what I am applying with:
Highschool reqs
Precalc 12 - 99
CHEM 11 - 86
UNI reqs (UBC)
ENG112 - 74 (B)
PSYC101 - 72 (B)
CPSC - 86 (A)
STAT - 82 (A-)
A&P1 - TBD
A&P2 - TBD
I'm taking A&P in the Summer
experiences
- senior home (occupational therapy) volunteer
- first aid volunteer
- pharmacy assistant volunteer
Here are my questions:
Does BCIT determine your GPA based on your own university's grading scale? Or their own? And also, I'm not too sure about how to calculate GPA, since there are so many different scales online. Can anyone provide an accurate estimate of my GPA?
Does number of hours you've volunteered matter? Or do they consider it by months? Because I don't see a box where you input how many hours in the form.
How strong does my application look so far, and any advice?

How were your grades like and how is your work experience? They're telling me I need to have 90's in every pre req requirement which is extremely overwhelming because some of these classes aren't that easy. Need to upgrade my math to meet the requirement but do they even care about the high school grade requirements or just the post secondary classes at bcit? Also do they prefer people more over that work in health care? Im currently a care aide hoping that will increase my chances.
The application process is pretty standard but the 2020 intakes will require CASPR, which is basically a video conference mmi.
When it comes to the application process, they score each application using points. The higher your GPA and the more credits you have, the more points you score. So you will want to have the best marks you can get. I personally did not have 90s for more of my prerequisites, but I applied with a BSc degree.
For the highschool requirements, they do look at it. For me, my chemistry mark was too low, so I replaced it with my organic chemistry class taken at university because I did very well in it. That grade was also used for my 1 of 2 classes needed to fill the 6 credit requirement of courses that are in other fields from the requirements.
When it comes to work experience, you can work in any situation that involves customer service, leadership, etc. It is not solely health care they look at.
When it comes to volunteer experience, it is not scored in your application, instead, if you and another applicant has the same score, they will use any volunteer experience to determine the better applicant.
While taking the prerequisites, I would suggest taking the LIBS classes as well because they will give you points for that and it means 2 less courses you need to take during the nursing program.
hope this helps
