BCIT January/April 2019 Intake Discussion

World Canada CA Programs

Published

Hey everyone, I know the BCIT January 2019 admission deadline is still a ways to go but I just wanted to know how many people are planning to apply, and also exchange some advice and questions with each other.

First off, I'd like to show you what I am applying with:

Highschool reqs

Precalc 12 - 99

CHEM 11 - 86

UNI reqs (UBC)

ENG112 - 74 (B)

PSYC101 - 72 (B)

CPSC - 86 (A)

STAT - 82 (A-)

A&P1 - TBD

A&P2 - TBD

I'm taking A&P in the Summer

experiences

- senior home (occupational therapy) volunteer

- first aid volunteer

- pharmacy assistant volunteer

Here are my questions:

Does BCIT determine your GPA based on your own university's grading scale? Or their own? And also, I'm not too sure about how to calculate GPA, since there are so many different scales online. Can anyone provide an accurate estimate of my GPA?

Does number of hours you've volunteered matter? Or do they consider it by months? Because I don't see a box where you input how many hours in the form.

How strong does my application look so far, and any advice?

Darn. That's pretty intimidating

Hi! im in BCIT's january 2018 intake. They do look at work experience over volunteer experience. you could have over 200 hours of volunteer experience, but if someone else has job experience they would be chosen over the volunteer hours.

Hey guys!

I'm a student at SFU applying to this intake as well. One of the advisors at SFU actually used to be a nursing advisor at BCIT (lucky for me), so she told me some pretty helpful things. You're right, there is a specific scale for work experience, but if you have none they'll for sure consider volunteer experience, just not on as big of a scale. There's also a little part at the bottom of the application where you can write all of the extra volunteering and other things that make you a strong applicant, and she strongly suggested not leaving that blank. Apparently lots of ppl do bc they think that it won't be read, but it really is, and could make a difference. But ya, they do look at work experience : GPA at about a 60:40 ratio apparently, which sucks for those of us (like me) who are young students who haven't worked in the field, but it does make sense. :)

Hey everyone!

I am a student from UBC (graduating this May with BSc.) with a lot of work/co-op experience (16 months) in research but not exactly in health care... I am currently volunteering at two residential care homes as well as for CBS but I have only just started and I am worried that it may not be enough. ):

I also have the same question as Seji regarding GPA. How does BCIT calculate it and on what scale? Does anyone know if they also look at cumulative GPA (in addition to prerequisite course grades) because my upper year grades are great but my lower year grades aren't. Does anyone know the average GPA from past intakes?

Lastly, even though the BCIT Nursing site stated that there is no "waitlist", I heard that if you don't make it into your chosen intake, they may admit you for the next intake? I am assuming this is only if you are listed high enough on the waitlist but still don't get in?

By the way, thank you Seji for making this thread as I don't have to stress alone anymore. :)

Hey! Congrats on finishing your degree!

I'm pretty sure they just calculate GPA based on the pre reqs! I don't know how the waitlist works though.

Are you guys applying anywhere else? Or just BCIT?

Thank you, it has been a very long journey! :)

1st choice: BCIT

- highly regarded

- fast program (3 year vs 4 year for others)

- earliest intake that I qualify for

2nd choice: UBC

- research-orientated (so I've heard)

- fast program (2 year) but quite costly

- earliest intake I qualify for is Sept 2019 and not 2018 (I have to do some courses this summer)

3rd choice: Undecided

Any suggestions? I have looked into Langara, Douglas, and Kwantlen but I can't really differentiate them..

What about you? Are you thinking of applying to other places as well?

Oh nice!

I got accepted into UBCO nursing last year but I ended up declining the offer, because I didn't have the heart to move away from home.

I just finished my pre reqs at Langara, so I'm going to apply to BCIT and Langara for the Jan intake!! Langaras program has a pretty good reputation as well, but you don't get summers off :(

Oh, I am just applying to BCIT. I would apply to Langara if it didnt have a stupid STAT prereq. I have taken STAT but it is not an equivalent course, sadly.

Aw, good luck to us all! I'm so so nervous.

I am applying to BCIT and UBC vancouver for my second choice. I want to finish my nursing program within the next three years, and these are the only schools I know of that can get me started within the next year to finish in three years. I know Douglas college is also a three year program, but it has a waitlist

Here is some information from hamber/ Tupper Career center that breaks down the different nursing schools in the lower mainland. It is an older document published in 2015!

Hi everyone, I'm glad this thread was started!

I'm applying to the January intake, very nervous. It's been a bit of a scenic route getting into the nursing program so hopefully this is it.

I'm applying with the following:

English: A

Math: B

Psych: A

Anatomy Phys II - B+

Chem: B

Just retaking Anatomy and Physiology I as it needs to be within the last few years.

Other than that I have a Bachelors Degree in Exercise Science, have been volunteering at a local emergency department for 3 years, work in healthcare in staffing administration (full-time) and as a research assistant (part-time).

When is everyone planning to submit their applications?
