BCIT January/April 2019 Intake Discussion

World Canada CA Programs

Published

Hey everyone, I know the BCIT January 2019 admission deadline is still a ways to go but I just wanted to know how many people are planning to apply, and also exchange some advice and questions with each other.

First off, I'd like to show you what I am applying with:

Highschool reqs

Precalc 12 - 99

CHEM 11 - 86

UNI reqs (UBC)

ENG112 - 74 (B)

PSYC101 - 72 (B)

CPSC - 86 (A)

STAT - 82 (A-)

A&P1 - TBD

A&P2 - TBD

I'm taking A&P in the Summer

experiences

- senior home (occupational therapy) volunteer

- first aid volunteer

- pharmacy assistant volunteer

Here are my questions:

Does BCIT determine your GPA based on your own university's grading scale? Or their own? And also, I'm not too sure about how to calculate GPA, since there are so many different scales online. Can anyone provide an accurate estimate of my GPA?

Does number of hours you've volunteered matter? Or do they consider it by months? Because I don't see a box where you input how many hours in the form.

How strong does my application look so far, and any advice?

Hey Guys!

I'm not sure if I want to apply with the GPA that have at the moment. But let me share it to you and please tell me if you think I should apply? Ps. I also tried applying for the Langara Jan 2019 Intake with a 3.14 GPA, so going into BCIT is my backup!

Secondary Grades:

Pre-Calculus 11: A

Chemistry 11: B

Post-Secondary Grades:

Bhsc 1200: A-

Psychology 1101: A-

French 1115 (Langara): A-

Statistics 1124 (Langara): B

English 1127 (Langara): C+

*Overall GPA: 3.39 or 3.4

*Work Experience: I've working at an Optical Shop for more than 2 years now as an Optical Associates (does that count for work experience?)

*No Degree

So what do you guys think? Anything helps! :)

jamesllagas, Your GPA is competitive. I think Langara only considers GPA, while BCIT considers a wide range of things including GPA, work experience.

Also, did you compute your grades based off of Langara's grading scale?

What is Langara's grading scale? And you say that my GPA is competitive. Is that good?

Oh, nvm about the grading scale. I think they are relatively the same throughout all universities in BC at least.

And yeah, your GPA seems good

So should I apply at BCIT with a GPA 3.4? Do you think I have a chance?

That's definitely a competitive GPA (based off of what BCIT's considers the range is) so give it a shot! Like the others have said, BCIT looks at more than just GPA but going off of what you're applying with, you seem like you have a solid application so far.

jamesllagas, what makes Langara your first choice? if you don't mind me asking

Also, have any of you taken either LIBS 7001 and/or 7002/7021 yet? I know they're not mandatory requirements but they do strengthen applications apparently.

That sounds great! It's a relief to hear that I might have a chance lol!

No not at all! After I graduated highschool, I tried to plan everything out. So what I had in mind was that in order for me to increase my chance of getting into nursing in general, i'll apply first at langara for Plan A. If Plan A didnt work, BCIT would be my Plan B. So yeah!

hi all! I just had a quick question - when it says to attach "Transcripts and/or test results for all academic requirements" how are you attaching your high school transcript? I know we can attach our official university transcript, but normally don't we order our high school transcripts to be sent to the institution we're applying to, we don't attach them directly? Thanks in advance!

hi guys! Thanks for starting this thread :)

I've recently graduated from SFU with a Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences and I'm also planning to apply for the January intake.

I'm applying with..

High school:

Chemistry 11 - 95%

Pre-Calculus - 95%

SFU:

ENG 199W - A

BPK 305 & 105 - B+

PSYC 100 - B-

2 additional SFU courses (statistics and health research) - A+

and a BSc in HSCI degree

I've been volunteering at a hospice for the last year, and as for paid work experience I've completed a coop at the BC Women's Hospital that I think will be applicable.

Thanks again for starting this thread, looks like it will be very helpful for us!
