Hey everyone, I know the BCIT January 2019 admission deadline is still a ways to go but I just wanted to know how many people are planning to apply, and also exchange some advice and questions with each other.
First off, I'd like to show you what I am applying with:
Highschool reqs
Precalc 12 - 99
CHEM 11 - 86
UNI reqs (UBC)
ENG112 - 74 (B)
PSYC101 - 72 (B)
CPSC - 86 (A)
STAT - 82 (A-)
A&P1 - TBD
A&P2 - TBD
I'm taking A&P in the Summer
experiences
- senior home (occupational therapy) volunteer
- first aid volunteer
- pharmacy assistant volunteer
Here are my questions:
Does BCIT determine your GPA based on your own university's grading scale? Or their own? And also, I'm not too sure about how to calculate GPA, since there are so many different scales online. Can anyone provide an accurate estimate of my GPA?
Does number of hours you've volunteered matter? Or do they consider it by months? Because I don't see a box where you input how many hours in the form.
How strong does my application look so far, and any advice?
I wrote 1. Team-leader at McDonald's. I talked about my responsibilities as a leader/trainer, emphasizing on team-building qualities. 2. Nurse Next Door - I recently got this position but it involves companionship and making a difference in home care for clients. 3. Volunteering at a senior's home where I had roughly 200 hours. In the additional information, I also mentioned leadership that I took in high school as it involved a lot of activities that helped the community, school and children in elementary schools. I'm hoping it's good enough but I'm sure there are also highly qualified applicants applying with YEARS of experience in health care.
I know they haven't sent any emails yet but just wondering, does anyone know what kind of questions they will be asking for the "step 2" process? Its just I've read tons of posts about how they were not able to get in, even with a good GPA and lots of experience, only because they failed the interview.

From what I know, it is just a personal profile. So if you've done a UBC application before and you had to do a personal profile, questions are some what similar. They ask things like "tell us a time you weren't honest and what happened after". Something along the lines of this just to see you your character.

That's an amazing application! I have years of work experience in retail and training. I also work at a dental clinic as a sterilization technician but my job covers everything from front desk to assistanting the dentist. As well as working as a caregiver at a senior care company. I put down that I volunteered at a hospital in the emergency room but I heard volunteer work isn't even looked at.
Is this your first intake you're applying for?

From what I was told, volunteer is looked at only if they are deciding between individuals with the same score on their application. Volunteering would basically make your application stand out compared to others.
As for work experience, it doesn't have to be health care related. It can be anything that has to do with customer service, serving experience, etc. They just want to see your 'people care and interactions'. As well as leadership, demonstrating you can work with all types of people (different backgrounds, ages).
This was quoted from an advisor that I spoke with.

Yeah I was told people experience is what they want but I emailed them and I got back "Work experience. General work experience is reviewed. Having health related work experience can enhance an application but it is not required. If an applicant does not have work experience of any kind then they will consider volunteer experience in a health related field." so health care related work just makes it stand out a little more.

You have a very competitive application as well! Regardless of whether or not volunteering is strongly looked at, I think mentioning the hospital ER will look amazing for handling fast-paced, stressful environments. And yes, this is my first time applying so I'm super nervous! What about you?
