BCIT January/April 2019 Intake Discussion

Published

Hey everyone, I know the BCIT January 2019 admission deadline is still a ways to go but I just wanted to know how many people are planning to apply, and also exchange some advice and questions with each other.

First off, I'd like to show you what I am applying with:

Highschool reqs

Precalc 12 - 99

CHEM 11 - 86

UNI reqs (UBC)

ENG112 - 74 (B)

PSYC101 - 72 (B)

CPSC - 86 (A)

STAT - 82 (A-)

A&P1 - TBD

A&P2 - TBD

I'm taking A&P in the Summer

experiences

- senior home (occupational therapy) volunteer

- first aid volunteer

- pharmacy assistant volunteer

Here are my questions:

Does BCIT determine your GPA based on your own university's grading scale? Or their own? And also, I'm not too sure about how to calculate GPA, since there are so many different scales online. Can anyone provide an accurate estimate of my GPA?

Does number of hours you've volunteered matter? Or do they consider it by months? Because I don't see a box where you input how many hours in the form.

How strong does my application look so far, and any advice?

Will they prioritize April applicants over January applicants for the April intake?

I dont think so! Should be a fair shot for everyone just based on qualification

My friend has applied to the January intake and her name is on the list! I'm hoping to get accepted to the April intake and my name is on the same list.

Yeah my friend applied for the April intake and I see her name on the list as well! So the short-list is comprised of both January and April intakes

Hmm...doesn't really seem like a fair shot for everyone if January applicants are being considered for April spots over April applicants. Do April applicants get the same consideration for the January slot? Seems a little odd. Hopefully in the future they separate the two intakes.

That's exactly what I thought. I know that depending on the applicant, they'll carry one or two over to the next intake. However, for the most part, they only consider giving seats to the people who applied for that particular semester.

I suppose that's true if you put it that way. I'm not 100% sure exactly how/if everyone gets considered for April though. I've read that you can get considered if you simply pass the quiz but don't get accepted for January buuuut anyone know if this is the same case???

@Pilot0504 and @jaem what intakes are you both applying for?

I've applied for January but on the MAQ, I added a note about wanting to be considered for April's intake. I doubt it does anything anyways but it was/is worth a shot to let them know. From what I've heard from people who got carried over to the semester after the one the applied to, they're at the top of the hold list and have a really good overall application, including the quiz ofc.

Now i'm wondering what number the total applications and shortlisted candidates are for EACH intake. Because perhaps if april did not get as many short-listed applicants, they will move over more than just the top hold list individuals to april for consideration.

Maybe but even if that was true, I'm sure that they still have a relatively high ratio of applicants to seats so I think you'd have to be an outstanding applicant for them to consider you for the intake you didn't apply for. I heard that for last April they let in a number of people from January but I'm not 100% sure about that information.

One of applicants from a previous intake told me that you will only get considered for April intake if not enough people applied for April and you were waitlisted for January.

Hmm, I feel like that makes sense tbh. When would you find out about your acceptance though? If they finalize the acceptances for both intakes at the same time
