So, basically, bats invaded this hospital, and it was forced to close everything except the ER until they can "de-bat" the hospital.
It was a "so, anything can happen" article until I got to the point where they said patients had been complaining about bats flying into their rooms for months.....months. Folks, I'd have seen one bat, and the ICU would have had a skylight.
Okay, next time I have a patient tell me they see bugs, snakes, bats, or other critters, I'm going to go look before I reach for the haldol...

Loved the last comment about the haldol lol. That must be a nightmare for the hospital administration. Stinks for all of the employees, too...no work now. And for the patients who had bats flying around lol

Maybe they aren't really bats but "biter nurses" leaving their shifts?

wonder if they will have to do rabies prophylaxis on their cache of patients... a friend of mine had a bat in their house and that was a mandate of the dept of health. That's what my friend told me anyhow....

This has been going on a while.....when someone in the know found out and feces hit the fan. Talk about a place driving you batty....
That reminds me of a story. Many years ago, the hospital I was working at was doing construction on the field near by and one night a patient on complete bed rest that was supposed to keep their legs straight would NOT stay in the bed. He kept talking about the "Little friend" in bed with him that came out of the ceiling.:icon_roll Really? and you don't drink?, we thought.
Well, We finally called the CV surgeon for Haldol because this patient was becoming more agitated. We all went in (all 4 of us for a 35 bed tele unit) to restrain the patient and sedate him......we opened the bathroom door for light (to keep a peaceful environment so as to not agitate the patient further:rolleyes:), pulled back the covers ........when a mouse ran down the bed, leapt off the bed to the floor and ran over the top of my feet.
. As I took a deep breath to let out a blood curdling scream a fellow nurse grabbed my arm and said "DON'T SCREAM". Much to our chagrin we had to admit this when calling the MD back and explain that we didn't need to sedate the patient because his friend was a mouse in his bed. The hospital called an exterminator but the problem continued so our LPN (love you Louise:saint:) declared that "Them mouses aren't so stupid to go into a trap with no food" and went about to set her own traps with peanut butter.
About 3 am we heard .......SNAP! and then SNAP! then SNAP! SNAP! and we hear Louise "I believe I got myself some meeces" and proudly presented her catch to the manager come morning and told her to get her money back because those expensive exterminators didn't catch a single mouse. We all feel on the floor laughing at the look on our manager's face.:rotfl:
She was a piece of work, that Louise, and she taught me everything.

Those poor little bats were probably traumatized for life by all that hullabaloo!!! Poor little fellows, just flying around, finding flies, etc., sheesh. I would have to worry about the guano....

This thread is three years old...how did I miss it?? And where were all the expected remarks from and about the crusty old bat society? Sheesh..talk about a missed opportunity!

Many years ago I worked in one of the old state hospitals - old buildings spread out over about 500 acres. The building in which I worked had a bat infestation. At night our routine was to go upstairs to the dorm and chase the bats out the fire escape door with brooms. Eventually they moved us out of the building.
Later, needing the space, they reopened the building - to house the Alcohol Detox unit! Guess they figured they wouldn't know the difference between the real critters and the imaginary ones!
