Banner Nurse Fellows Program

Published

I interviewed for the nurse fellows program through Banner about three weeks ago and still haven't heard anything! I was talking to another girl there for an interview who said that her friend (I know, I know, don't listen to anything like this, but I can't help it!) got a call a week after her interview offering her a slot. Has anyone else interviewed and heard anything?

I don't know why I'm so freaking out about it. I'm already accepted into Mesa to start in January (I deferred) but I WANT TO GET INTO THIS!

I'm with those who's mentioned that the phone hasn't rang. I'm waiting, too! Keeping the faith! Congrats on those who have been called and have already gotten interviews! Good luck!!!

I am sad to see the Banner Fellows program ending after the July cohort. I got the same email as a previous post did. I am very thankful that I was able to get in and only have one more month of block 2. Banner nurse fellows is a wonderful program and I hope that the economy in Phoenix changes so they can bring it back. Those that get into the July cohort should feel very blessed Good Luck to you all!

Ok correct me if I'm wrong. The BNF is part time and takes 2yrs to complete? The other one is the accelerated Lpn to Rn?

yes, you pretty much go year round with just a few short breaks, so it still only takes 2 years ( i am not in BNF, but am in a part time program).

i do not believe that banner had a lpn to rn program, at least not any that i heard of.

that being said, after the july cohort there will be no BNF so the info is useless now anyhow.

The BNF fast track program is only 16 months.

The BNF fast track program is only 16 months.

That's for the regular accelerated program (16 months); I believe there is also a part-time option for the BF program that is 24 months...two nights a week and clinicals on the weekends. Not sure what the July 2010 cohort will be, but I think in the past it has been the part-time option. The accelerated program for Gateway has started in Oct in the past. Since everything has changed for this program (and July will be the final cohort) who knows what it will be...anyone out there know?

I know...it's a shame that they have to put the program on hold for now, but I do understand the reasoning behind their decision in light of the current economic situation we are facing. Hopefully someday things will turn around enough for them to bring it back.

Congrats to you on getting in before this happened! :) So, you're enjoying the program so far? Is it what you expected (nursing school)? I'm sure it's overwhelming at first, but are you used to it a little more now that you are in block 2? I'm anxious to get started!

For me it's like when you are going to have a baby, please tell you it's hard, they tell you that you will get no sleep, and so on, but you really don't *know* how hard until you are there. And just like having a baby, there is that joy that makes it all worthwhile.

It's very very hard. But then you go to clinicals and wear the uniform and meet the patients. You feel proud, glad-- and scared because you realize you still have so much to learn. Last week I was about to pass meds to someone. I had already checked them 3 times as required, looked up one, and knew I had the right patient. The RN helped me get them out. As I set them on the bedside table I had a small slient panic attack about the gravity of the responsibility I had. I excused myself and took the meds back out and checked a fourth time and then gave them.

Time management is a huge skill to learn and it's hard to learn that from textbooks. How do you manage so many patients at once? Especially when two of them are calling for you, and there is a doctor on the phone for you?

I miss my family and friends. I miss my TV shows. It's hard but I'm having fun. too.

The baby analogy is good and so true! I think anything in life that is truly worthwhile takes work and dedication, but the payoff is great and the work and sacrifice is so worth it in the end!

Your meds story made me chuckle...it sounds like something I would do. In fact, those are the things I get nervous about...people's lives will be in MY hands! I'm determined to be the best nurse I can be, though, and I know it won't be easy but I'm so looking forward to the challenge! :)

For anyone going through interview process with banner for July CoHort:

I had my interview with Banner today. Very laid back and comfortable. Four people on the oral board. Asked approx 8 questions...everything they asked related to their mission statement, values and vision of Banner. So review that and you should be good to go.

They confirmed this is the last Banner Fellows Class for the foreseeable future.

Best of luck to all that received phone calls and got an interview. For the rest keep on plugging away, will happen for all of us eventually.

back2class,

I am really enjoying the nursing program and the people I have met. There is a lot of work involved but I still find time to watch tv, spend time with family, and go to the movies on occasion. Life doesnt stop like some would say it just becomes more challenging at times. When clinicals start you become a little more occupied because of care plans. I felt like I had no confidence in clinicals in block one but that changes as well. I feel I have a lot more confidence and can do a lot more in block 2 and I dont feel nauseous when I go to the hospital this block LOL. Critical thinking is a big part of nursing school and that is how the test are. Block 3 is supposed to be a lot harder than 1 and 2 but I am excited because it is OB/Peds which is my favorite. Good luck to you and just remember that nursing school is what you make of it. It can be hard at times but fun and amazing at others. I have learned that I am not the only one that gets nervous we all do :)

WannabeBanner, Thank you for that information!! By any chance can you tell us the specific questions asked? I'm so nervous..just trying to be as best prepared as possible :o

Regarding exact questions they asked... I'm sorry I cant recall verbatim. But all did relate to mission statement, vision and values. They asked you to give examples of collaboration and integrity etc. in your previous work experiences or school experiences.

Good Luck!
