Back to being an ugly nursing student

Yes, currently I'm a nursing student. I work full-time, go to school full-time, and study 24/7. However, you can hardly tell by my appearance. Yes I have dark circles sometimes, but its not bad enough that make up won't cover it. I've been told hundreds of times that I should be a model, or that I'm very pretty and I keep my appearance very nice.I take time to put on make up q day, make sure my hair is nice, and make sure I do look presentable. I've been told this by nursing students, patients, and instructors.

I'm sorry, but I refuse to look anything but my best especially at clinicals. Your appearance is your first impression of you, whether you are a student or not. Patients love to see someone c- a decent appearance and hygiene taking care of them.

How do I know,?because I was a patient and patients have told me numerous times. I once had a patient tell me " Wow, I got a pretty CNA today, usually I get fat and ugly ones"

Not that appearance is everything, however I do thinks its important to be neat, clean, and presentable at all times.

Just my two cents.

At my school, we have to wear business attire to class. I'm talking slacks and everything. Of course, being a female, this means buying lots of new clothes to meet the criteria. It also means doing myself up (hair and makeup) every morning before lecture. The days of wearing pajamas to school are long gone.

Clinicals are a totally different thing. We have our butt ugly uniforms, probably designed by nuns who thought,

"how about a tunic top and tapered leg pants."

Besides looking literally like a clown at clinicals, by the end of a hard 12 hour day of cleaning butts and such, I look like a haggard mess. Any makeup application during clinicals would be putting lipstick on a pig.

I don't think that it's important to know how many people think you're a model. I also think it is very rude of your patients to be calling people fat and ugly (it doesn't offend me because I am far from fat...and, well, I have a husband so I can't be too horrid looking! :D), but we all know how patients can be at times.

Nursing students don't need to wear makeup if they don't want to, but showering and just being neat is a good way to show respect for yourself, your patients and your college's reputation. Above all, though, giving competent care is number one. Lovehospital--don't worry, you'll be fine.

Honestly thats awesome that you can go to class like that. Most the girls in my class wont go outside without makeup on and have to be dolled up all the time. A girl that can kick back and not care is actually the opposite of ugly.

In my RN program we must have our hear pulled back at all times if it is not short, and out of the way. We are NOT allowed to wear any make up, but a light foundation is allowed if you must. Our nails must be cut short, with see thru or no nail polish. We are not allowed to wear purfume or any products with a strong odor because the cancer patients cannot tolerate it.

So I can see if you are a women who feels more comfortable with hair done up with lots of hair spray, makeup, painted nails, and purfume you might not feel yourself.

Personally I cut my hair short a few weeks ago so it looks good all the time with minimal work, and no hair spray. I love not having to mess with my nails, and having a valid excuse. And I hardly wear makeup unless I am going out for the evening or something so its no big deal to me. The scurbs are a plus!!! Its like getting to wear my pjs to work which is totally me.

The dress code is one of the factors that attracted me to nursing. No muss no fuss and so me.

wohooo, there is one woman in my class who cut her hair short just for the program,I must say I admire her for the courage.

Hmm when I have a lot of time to spare and I'm not busy I like to put effort in my appearance, however to be honest it gets sooooo boring after a while, you really start to feel like a porcelain doll and you just want to go back to being you..:p

Yeah, but those are also the ones that look the most tired ;)

No really, nothing wrong with getting up 5-10 minutes earlier to make yourself look nice if it's going to make your entire day better. Personally I get a big confidence boost if I know I look clean and professional, if not necessarily gorgeous. If it's important to you, just put it a little higher on the priority list and go to bed a little earlier at night.

Well I got in trouble last semester for being to fashionable....the teacher didnt like my above shoulder lenght hair...but well but I did have much more time on my hands so I could afford to go that extra mile to look nice.
