Bachelors in Business to ADN

Published

I am new to this website! Not sure if anyone has answered this question already. I have completed my 4 year degree in Business graduated in 2008. I am thinking about going back to school to get an ADN degree. I have read many post on this forum about ADN vs BSN that is is super hard to get into management with just a ADN degree. With my previous degree in business would it still be hard for me to get into nursing management if i do not have a BNS? any suggestion or direction to the right forum with this answer would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks in advance!!

Specializes in Emergency Nursing.

They don't give a rats patootie about non nursing degrees. With more an more hospitals going for Magnet status one of the requirements is that all management be a minimum of BSN prepared. Most management types are dual degree MSN/MBA though.

thank you for your fast response, after searching my topic in other forums ( i suppose i should have done that first!) your answer is similar to all the other ones... that if you want a better chance of getting into management that BSN are the degree of choice, regardless of previous degrees obtained. :) Thanks!!

I have an associates in nursing and a bachelors in business. I can't even get a nursing job let alone a nurse management job. I suggest getting your BSN just to be able to get a RN job. Good luck

Specializes in Emergency Department.

I also have a BA in Bus Admin and an ADN but I did get a RN job. Never say never. Jobs are out there. You just have to look in places not everyone is looking.

If you already have a Bachelors degree you should look into the accelerated BSN or direct-entry MSN programs. Most require some prerequisites, but then are only 15-20 months in length. In my MSN program there are several students with business degrees.

Specializes in Med Surg - Renal.

Sounds like your passion is more management than nursing. Why not get an MBA and go right into management in some other field?

I just want to make sure that management would be an opportunity along the way in my RN career... i do not want to jump right into management, but just curious if i would have the opportunity with a ADN degree as I further my RN career. My mother in law always tells me that she regrets not getting an BSN because she can't get into management she has been an RN for 15+years.. so i just wanted to get some advice from some other nurses to see what there opinion was on a degree in another field. Thanks so much!

If you don't want to jump right into management, you can always get your BSN while working as an ADN. That's what I'm doing, but I want to go into some form of advanced practice. No management - ever. I don't look good in pearls and pumps hurt my feet. Bonus: many employers are happy to pay for it.

All that being said, if you have the opportunity and resources to get a BSN right away, definitely do it.

Just a word of caution, in our area in a recent hospital takeover by an out of state healthcare

system, it was the management jobs business and some nursing that were the first to go...

Its a difficult time in healthcare now...
