Australian Flag Unwelcome In Florida!

Published

on the tv this morning, word from florida in the usa tells of how an australian woman, married to an american man, has the australian flag flying outside her home. alongside the aussie flag is the american flag. in unison, side by side.

afterall, we are allies are we not?

well... the neighbours have threatened to sue our aussie sister if she does not remove the australian flag!!!

an ex-patriot american emailed the tv station and stated, "now you know why i now call australia home!"

it appears there's a real "sue you" mentality in the good ol usa!

how very sad.

perhaps next time australia is called to arms by our american allies, we should tell them, "no! sue you!"

given the welcome & friendships here on allnurses, between us aussies and the americans, and the long standing friendship between the two countires over many decades, this threat to sue one of our very own for flying our aussie flag outside her own home! leaves me feeling both outraged as well as angry & dissapointed.

grace

I've been in France and in many other countries and if we had arranged competition in xenofoby, France would have been the champion.

Sorry

Have you lived here? It's a different story to visiting somewhere. I've been here over three years and have been welcomed with open arms as a foreigner. The French take some getting to know, but get beneath that cool exterior and they are really very warm people. I find them less racist and less xenophobic than the British, and the Brits (though I speak as one) are actually not that bad

Another reason why I would never live in a neighborhood controlled by a "Homeowners Association". Too many rules.....

Thank you Bob and other posters for enlightening me regarding the housing situation. What a dreadful environment to live in! So alien to us Aussies, it'd never be allowed to happen here, that's for sure! We'd tell them to get stuffed!:angryfire

Having said that, there is a suburb here in South Australia which has won the "BEST PLACE IN THE WORLD TO LIVE" title. It's called GOLDEN GROVE, and there's some rules & regulations regarding fences, garages etc there, but certainly nothing as you have described in your posts.

I still maintain it's mean spirited and doesn't auger well for harmonious relationships within the neighbourhood. Wouldn't make the Aussie lady feel welcomed at all. Still, I guess rules are the rules.:uhoh3: No matter HOW ridiculous!

Wishing you all "up/over" there in the Northern Hemisphere, a HAPPY EASTER from "Down Under".

Cheers,

The same thing happened here a few years ago when a Canadian citizen "snowbird" (one who lives in Florida during the winter and Canada in the summer) was flying a Canadian flag. So it's not just Austrailia we hate. We hate any flag not American.

But yes, it's those pesky homeowner's associations and their myriad of rules and regulations.

As an American and a Floridian, I'm embarrased. I love ya!

Grace, it's only a small percentage, a very small that lives under those kind of associations. Mostly here in Florida, it's condos and mobile home parks that have associations. But we also have some retirement communities with associations as well. But rest assured, probably 99.9% of us are free to fly whatever flags we choose.

Yet another reason to reconsider a move to Florida. My BIL lives in a community like this and it drives him batty, all the rules.

I think you should post a big picture of the Austrialian flag here just to show people how neat it is.

Here you go :)

Folks here are correct about these homeowners associations. I've seen people get sued for having an American flag on a flagpole in the front yard. It seems that the flagpole detracts from the uniformity of the neighborhood.

If a homeowner's assoc. did that to me, I'd fly a tie died sheet with a picture of

Ozzy Osbourne on it out front.

I personally think that Australia has a cool flag. With the possible exceptions of Cuban, North Korean, Vietnamese or other such, I have no problem with folks flying flags of any nation in front of their home. I actually have a South Korean flag hanging on the wall in my guitar room. (My wife is S. Korean)

That being said, what would happen to the average home in France, Germany, Syria, Spain, or a wide variety of nations that has an American flag flying in front?

Well, one of my neighbours had an American flag without problems.

Frankly, I don't think it matters what would happen if an American flag were flown in Syria or France or wherever. I don't look to other countries to set an example of tolerance for my country.

It was a rhetorical question. America is repeatedly painted as the intolerant bad guy when we're actually one of the most tolerant nations on earth.

I lived in one of those neighborhoods in Huntington Beach years ago. Bland, Bland, and more Bland. Tan houses. Small, green manicured lawns without a dandelion in sight, white window coverings. Boring!

One time my car broke down in the driveway and a friend came over to help me fix it . . . a neighbor called the police and a patrol car came by to warn me that I was not allowed to work on my car in the front of my house. I could take it behind my house where no one could see it. Well, if I could get it started to move it from in front of my house, I wouldn't have a problem now would I?

People can get their sights set on such picayune things . . .

Hey, did you notice we are all agreeing for once? :rotfl:
