Austin Community College Fall 2011 Hopefuls

Published

Any Fall 2011 ACC hopefuls out there? I start my nursing skills class in March and am very excited. I'm reapplying next week for the Fall. If I calculated my ranking correctly I should make it in.

Good luck everyone!

I completed my CPR class today with Janna from Sav-A-Heart and her class was wonderful. Her next class is next tuesday at 9 AM. The classes are done out of her home and are super laid back. You receive your AHA cards on the spot. Their number is 257-0508.

If anyone still needs to take their physical and TB test, the Pro Med clinic off of 183 & 620 did mine for $51 and the nurse that helped me had just graduated from the CEC program this past December. She was really nice and had lots of advice :)

Does anyone know where I can get a Flu shot?

Also, if anyone who will be attending CEC this fall wants to meet to practice for the check-off or just to study let me know.

There are no flu shots in Austin till September. I called the school and they said we didn't need the shot till October...at least that's what the CEC lady told me.

Has anyone purchased the books from the book list yet? I'm just trying to find the most cost effective method of getting my books.

I was about to purchase the Medical Surgery book and wanted to see if anyone had any input about getting the 7th edition as opposed to the 8th edition. I'm sure like most textbooks, there is not much that has changed. Anyone have any thoughts?

I bought my books on Amazon. They've had the best prices for books since I can remember.

They switched from the 7th edition to the 8th edition right at the start of last semester. I stuck with the 7th edition and some classmates bought the 8th. We did a side by side comparison and aside from a few new pictures and charts, the words were same. The only thing that might annoy some of you is that when they assign readings on blackboard or in class, they have updated the page numbers to the 8th edition page numbers. Other than that, I did fine using the 7th edition.

In hybrid, we didn't even open the Med Surg book until partways through the second 8 weeks. So if you don't have it by the start of class it isn't a huge deal. We used the Harkreader nursing skills book for everything the first 10 weeks. Don't know if that will change since they stopped using the Harkreader book for nursing skills.

Yes, they do one every semester. It's not mandatory but it is informative. You sit with your campus classmates and you spend the day rotating through stations. They do a question and answer session with current RN students who just completed level 1 and other students in other levels, your group also gets about 30 minutes with the Dean of Nursing herself, financial aid spokesperson, and other speakers. If you miss it, it isn't a big deal. It is cool to see and meet some of your classmates who are going to be at other campuses. For me, the most interesting part was the question and answer session with students who had already been through level 1 and other current RN students, and the session with the Dean of Nursing. They will send out an email with the info for the Jump Start session asking you to RSVP because they provide lunch. The only reason I know the date is July 29th is because I will be one of the "current RN students" on the discussion panel.

The mandatory orientation in August is the one that is the most important. That is when you meet at your campus and choose clinical groups, take pics, and meet your instructors.

Hi there, just wondering if you attended RRC for your first semester, if so i was wondering if i could ask you a few questions through an email about a professor that you may recommend since we cant mention names on here, or if you know anyone who could that would be great, thanks so much, you are always so helpful!

Hey there,

Nope sorry, I am in hybrid and I am not familiar with any of the RRC instructors. Although we shared a campus I didn't know any of the students who were in RRC onsite. :uhoh3:

It is so exciting to be officially registered for Nursing School. It has been a long road to get here but so worth it.
