Austin Community College - ACC - Spring '11 hopefuls

U.S.A. Texas

Published

Hi ya'll-

Thought I'd get this started for the rest of us who, sadly, did not make it in for Fall 2010. I'm hoping to re-submit my application for Spring today (or this week). Does anyone know, do we receive the form from the nursing office? Or, is this something we should grab from the website?

My score upon re-applying will be 54.899. Dang, sure am hoping this will be high enough and get me in this round!

How's everyone else holding up? Did everyone complete the pre-req - 1105 already? I have not and won't (due to extenuating circumstances) until early Fall. Will this negatively impact my chances of getting accepted? According to Tammy and the office, no. But, wanting to get everyone's input. Hoping we will hear about acceptance by Sept. Does anyone know this date for sure? The application period closed July 15, don't know why it takes them so long to get this word out.

Anyway- good luck to you. This is my 3rd round of applying :( so I sure am ready to get in and get on with this career change!

Yea LiliValley!!! Congratulations to the max! I'm also going to CEC, so I'll definitely be seeing you there. Way to go!!!

For everybody else, we had a Level 3 student representing ADNSA come to our Nursing Skills class today to see if we'd like to join ADNSA, and to sell used scrubs and really cool ACC Nursing t-shirts. She said that they'd have someone at our December 7th Jump Start session too.

Cool!! How much were the shirts? I could've sworn I have seen some ACC Nursing hoodies somewhere too but I could just be making that up. lol:lol2:

There weren't any hoodies with the shirts, nor was there any mention of hoodies, but who knows. They hadn't brought everything with them, so there may be more to choose from at the Jump Start. The shirts were $12 with a $5 membership and $15 without.

FYI: the shirts are somewhat "vintage/limited edition" as they'll be selecting and ordering a new design in spring. So grab 'em now! Also...the cost of membership is going up to $10 so if you have the opportunity to join for $5 you might want to grab it. :-)

Holy smokes, Lili...soooo awesome. I wish you were going to be at EVC with me but I know CEC was your first choice, so big props to you! I'm VERY happy for you. You so deserve it. :yeah:

I love reading all these posts..... I am a Fall 2012 hopeful. I know...thats a ways away.... Next fall I will apply to the nursing program. I am currently in Anatomy.... struggling a little. Way is it that all the non-science classes I rock in but Anatomy I struggle in? Makes me wonder if I am going into the right field. I want so very badly to be a nurse. Did anyone else find this class difficult/struggle but made it through? If so what did you do to make it?

Congrats to everyone...... Perhaps we will meet in passing.

nicolet3271,

I too love reading these post because I am a Spring 2012 hopeful. I'm about to finish up Anatomy. I actually LOVE my class because the professor that teaches it is SUPER AWESOME! Next semester is going to be brutal since I'm taking the rest of my science pre-reqs along with Human Growth & Development. I'm taking Phys with the same prof who is teaching Anatomy so I know what to expect regarding teaching styles and test formats. I'm so excited...I know I still have months and months to go but it will be over before I know it.

As far as I know hospitals actually like to hire nursing students over just a cna. In order to get a job you have to know someone, be a volunteer and know someone or know someone who knows someone in the department you want to get hired. You will have to harass some people. I was a volunteer where I work now for 1.5 years before I got accepted to nursing school and I actually went in and talked to the ER director and also had recommendations from my fellow nurses I worked with. That's how I got hired. Another guy who got hired with me had his EMT, wanted to be a chriropracter and also walked into the ER and talked the manager himself. That's how he got hired. It takes guts to do it but it makes you stand out. If you don't get hired they'll most likely tell you I will keep you in mind but you have to keep calling asking if anything opens. I was calling for a month about 3 times a week waiting for an opening and it finally opened. I actually got an offer at gerogetown in med surgery that I turned down. They like nursing students for pct/ca alot and alot of the perferred qualifications are for a semseter of nursing. Sometimes you have to ask who DIRECTLY hired people to their deparment and sometimes you have to go the extra length to just go in and tell them you want this job and your experitse. If not I hope you know someone. I just had another person in my class asking a friend of mine how to get hired on a floor and she told her the same thing. You've got to know someone or build a relationship. It is competive to get these jobs and there are alot of nursing students out there. At St.David's I know directors of units hire people. Call the hospital number and ask to be directed to say the ER director and if they answer talk to them, if not don't. You'll be suprised that alot of the directors are happy and impressed to see you go that extra steps. good luck!

Jackfackmasta,

I was wondering what hospital did you volunteer for? I'm completing my pre-reqs and hopefully will be submitting my application at the end of the Spring 2011 semester for a spot in the Spring 2012 ADN program. In the meantime, I wanted to volunteer at a hospital. I've went to the websites for Scott & White, Seton and St. David's. I'm kind of new to Austin so not sure if I'm covering all my bases as far as hospitals are concerned. Should I volunteer at a bunch of different hospitals or just stick to one hospital. Any advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Thanks! I haven't even tried to apply yet, still at my (non-medical industry) job and finishing up here. I am volunteering in the ER at Seton main to get some experience and I totally love it...but it's going to be a little harder for me as I have no prior medical experience.

An AIDS hospice sounds like SUCH an amazing opportunity. You'll have to fill us in on how that goes...many congrats. :)

texasceleste,

I want to volunteer at a hospital as well. I went to Seton's website and a few other different hospital's website to fill out volunteer applications. How long did it take you to get accepted as a volunteer? Do you get to pick the area where you would like to volunteer at? Thanks!

Annbananz,

I volunteered at St.David's Medical Center Austin down by 32nd street and red river off of I35. Their web site is Volunteering :: St. David's Medical Center :: St. David's HealthCare

  • Application Available: Monday, December 6
  • Application Deadline: Friday, January 7

I do not recommend volunteering at multiple hospitals. I would recommend sticking with one hospital and while you volunteer get those connections made. Volunteers start off in the gift shop but there are some exceptions for nursing students and pre-med students but it depends on what Ashleigh says. I started off in the ER. I did not want to do gift shop. St.David's is an amazing place to volunteer and we have a very strong volunteer base here at the hospital. Best of luck

annbananz,

I applied twice before getting accepted. I am still not positive what did the trick, but I suspect timing may have had something to do with it--I applied in late spring/early summer and I'm thinking there were fewer student volunteers available the second time I applied, so I felt like I got in quickly. I was offered a choice of two different positions based on what was available for the time slots I specified (weekends.) ER or ICU were the choices--I did not have to start in the gift shop, but I did specify that I was a pre-nursing student so maybe that helped get me on the floor quicker. Also, since I was mainly available on weekends and the hospital has limited services during that time, maybe that was a factor too.

I cannot recommend volunteering at a hospital enough--it is great experience to help you get comfortable with the hospital, and I always feel awesome after completing a shift there.
