Austin Community College - ACC - Spring '11 hopefuls

U.S.A. Texas

Published

Hi ya'll-

Thought I'd get this started for the rest of us who, sadly, did not make it in for Fall 2010. I'm hoping to re-submit my application for Spring today (or this week). Does anyone know, do we receive the form from the nursing office? Or, is this something we should grab from the website?

My score upon re-applying will be 54.899. Dang, sure am hoping this will be high enough and get me in this round!

How's everyone else holding up? Did everyone complete the pre-req - 1105 already? I have not and won't (due to extenuating circumstances) until early Fall. Will this negatively impact my chances of getting accepted? According to Tammy and the office, no. But, wanting to get everyone's input. Hoping we will hear about acceptance by Sept. Does anyone know this date for sure? The application period closed July 15, don't know why it takes them so long to get this word out.

Anyway- good luck to you. This is my 3rd round of applying :( so I sure am ready to get in and get on with this career change!

So, who thinks the textbook list is the same as it was for Fall 2010? I'm ready to get my books!!

I haven't seen anything official yet. I'm waiting for info on the lab packs too.

I checked with the nursing dept administrative staff, and was told that the faculty is still firming up the book list for spring, and that there will likely be a couple changes. They're expecting to have the list ready sometime in the next couple of weeks, along with the spring 2011 handbook and lab pack info.

Textbook list was posted. I don't see any changes. The Nurse's Drug Guide says 2010 but I am going with the 2011 Edition.

Minor update to Orientation pages: now says the link to purchase the lab pack will be posted by Nov. 15.

hello all! i was accepted for spring 2011 in acc's nursing program and choose the hybrid option. i am now working an 8 to 5 type of job that will not work well with the nursing school schedule. i was a certified nursing assistant but my certification is no longer active. i have been applying to seton, st. david’s and scott and white with absolutely no luck!! i am really starting to get frustrated and worried. i have my gain form and bls certification but i am starting to wonder if i should reactivate my cna certification. i need any and all advice. should i take copies of my resume and gain form up to the hospital that has openings?? i spoke with someone at seton she told me that her hiring managers do not like hiring nursing students. i would like to work full time nights. i have experience and i loved being in an acute care setting, which is why i am going to nursing school. please help!

As far as I know hospitals actually like to hire nursing students over just a cna. In order to get a job you have to know someone, be a volunteer and know someone or know someone who knows someone in the department you want to get hired. You will have to harass some people. I was a volunteer where I work now for 1.5 years before I got accepted to nursing school and I actually went in and talked to the ER director and also had recommendations from my fellow nurses I worked with. That's how I got hired. Another guy who got hired with me had his EMT, wanted to be a chriropracter and also walked into the ER and talked the manager himself. That's how he got hired. It takes guts to do it but it makes you stand out. If you don't get hired they'll most likely tell you I will keep you in mind but you have to keep calling asking if anything opens. I was calling for a month about 3 times a week waiting for an opening and it finally opened. I actually got an offer at gerogetown in med surgery that I turned down. They like nursing students for pct/ca alot and alot of the perferred qualifications are for a semseter of nursing. Sometimes you have to ask who DIRECTLY hired people to their deparment and sometimes you have to go the extra length to just go in and tell them you want this job and your experitse. If not I hope you know someone. I just had another person in my class asking a friend of mine how to get hired on a floor and she told her the same thing. You've got to know someone or build a relationship. It is competive to get these jobs and there are alot of nursing students out there. At St.David's I know directors of units hire people. Call the hospital number and ask to be directed to say the ER director and if they answer talk to them, if not don't. You'll be suprised that alot of the directors are happy and impressed to see you go that extra steps. good luck!

Thanks for the tip! Lab pack is now ordered. Another step down. Got the rest of my textbooks in the mail last week. Due to the recommendations of a few of my friends in the program, I went ahead and purchased the clinical companion to our Med Surg book. I've heard it was really invaluable when searching for something quickly during clinicals and not having to lug that huge book with you.

Did everyone else get the emails about the jump start session and the added modules for Seton?? I am going to try and get that day off work to go the session. I'veheard it was a pretty basic rundown.

Yep, I got the notice about the jump start session and the added modules. It will be great to meet up with y'all at the jump start session. I guess that'll be the first chance we'll really be able to have a group of us "greenies" together, other than our small Nursing Skills classes, of course. It should be a pretty fun day. I just finished off the modules and although they said we'd need to print off the last page of each, I'm guessing that they really only need the one page where we sign off that we've completed them all. I'll still print the last page of them all anyway, since they asked. It's getting closer!!! :yeah:
