Austin Community College - ACC - Spring '11 hopefuls

U.S.A. Texas

Published

Hi ya'll-

Thought I'd get this started for the rest of us who, sadly, did not make it in for Fall 2010. I'm hoping to re-submit my application for Spring today (or this week). Does anyone know, do we receive the form from the nursing office? Or, is this something we should grab from the website?

My score upon re-applying will be 54.899. Dang, sure am hoping this will be high enough and get me in this round!

How's everyone else holding up? Did everyone complete the pre-req - 1105 already? I have not and won't (due to extenuating circumstances) until early Fall. Will this negatively impact my chances of getting accepted? According to Tammy and the office, no. But, wanting to get everyone's input. Hoping we will hear about acceptance by Sept. Does anyone know this date for sure? The application period closed July 15, don't know why it takes them so long to get this word out.

Anyway- good luck to you. This is my 3rd round of applying :( so I sure am ready to get in and get on with this career change!

Colleen

I believe I will be at the jump start program, but I'll be there to talk to the new students that are coming into the program.

So according to the email there are about 120 students attending the Jump Start session on December 7th. I'm going to be there. How many others on here are going?

I'll be there :)

Jump Start session was great! I am really glad I went. What did you guys think??

I thought the best part was the Q & A with the current students. That was pretty informative and made me excited again about the program after feeling a little demoralized in 1105. I'm bummed that we did not get to meet!

Were you sitting with your EVC group?? If so, I was WAY across the room with the hybrids in the back. One of only a few guys in the whole session. I liked the Q&A too, I also loved loved loved the breakout session with the nursing tutors! They cracked us all up! Maybe it was because we were the last group of the day but they were like a comedy team. I also enjoyed meeting and getting to ask questions from the Dean of Nursing. That was neat. She's very down to Earth.

Hi all! I'm so glad i stumbled across this site. I'm trying to get into the nursing program at ACC (most likely by spring 12), and i just took my anatomy assessment test yesterday, which they scored by today. I registered for Anatomy+Lab in RR in the evenings, and Human Growth and Development in Buda once a week. I'm working full time for the american cancer society, but i often have time to study there.

I just wanted to say hello, all of your tips have been great. Nursing is new to me, but I already have a BA in business. Any suggestions on which courses to take together next semester (summer)? I've already had math, reading, fine arts, history, psychology, speech, and humanities.

I'm listed as a self-advised student since i've been through school before. But I'm unsure of what the next step is after i complete all the pre-reqs. Any info would be great!

Thanks so much

Maggie

Hello! Welcome aboard! I took Anatomy at Cypress Creek and Human Growth and Development online in the same semester. After that I took Pharmacology at Eastview and Microbiology hybrid at Cypress Creek together. I liked taking those two together because they complemented each other lots of times. For example, when we were learning about antibiotics in Pharmacology, we were also learning them and doing experiments in Micro.

I saved Physiology for last and did it by itself because I heard it was very intense and it was.

During your last pre-req you can request permission to take the HESI for any session after your last pre-req is done. For example, last year at this time I was just finishing physiology but I had emailed the nursing department and asked for permission to register for the December 18th HESI which was the first HESI session after finals. It also happened to be the first day they were accepting applications for the Fall 2010 class. So me and a group of my friends literally got out of our HESI test with our scores and walked over to the nursing department to turn in our apps. Turn in your app as early as you can.

You can also learn all this by watching the online info session found on the website. Try and do your best in the pre-reqs. By best I mean A's. Even a couple B's might make you wait a semester before getting accepted.

thanks so much for your suggestions, they were very helpful! any recommendations on whether to buy/rent old/new textbooks...anyone know about the etextbooks and if laptops are generally allowed in nursing classes?

Hi wakeupmaggie!

I'm also in the process of getting my pre-reqs and co-reqs for the ADN program. Hopefully I'll be able to apply for the Spring 2012 Class after the completion of spring semester 11. I just completed Anatomy yesterday and I absolutely enjoyed the class! I also took it at RR. I'll be completing the rest of my pre-reqs next semester.

I attended a nursing info session at RR in November and Tammy (ACC Nursing Admissions Specialist) said that in the past the cutoff score for acceptance was a 52. In order to get that score the first time around, one must complete the pre-reqs and co-reqs (A's and B's, but mostly A's) and score a 10 on the HESI. One of the students that attended the info session completed all the pre-reqs and two of the co-reqs with all A's and asked Tammy if that was enough. That student was going to apply for Fall 11 and was told even if their score on the HESI was a 10, that student's overall application score would only be a 40 (4.0 for nursing GPA x 6 classes + 10 for HESI + 6 for info session and verification test). It seemed like a lot of the students in that info session thought that just completing the bare minimum (only pre-reqs) would be enough to get accepted into the ADN program the first time around but this is not the case.

May I ask, what are your goals for nursing? The reason why I ask is because one of my classmates in Anatomy already had her BS and she was taking classes at ACC for her pre-reqs for the Accelerated BSN Program at Concordia. That may be an option for you as well.

Hope this helps!

Best bet is check with your Anatomy professor. I emailed my professor a week before class started and she said that the textbook was REQUIRED for the class. However, after reading through the syllabus it stated that any Anatomy textbook would be fine even earlier editions of the required textbook. I think it's because some of the students in class took Anatomy before with a different professor and their textbooks would be good to use in this class as well.

What I did was I bought an earlier edition (the required textbook was 6th edition and I bought the 5th edition). It was exactly the same as the required textbook! The only difference, which wasn't major at all, was there were a handful of pictures in the new textbook but overall the text was the same. The required textbook was around $170, I think, and I bought mine online for $20.

Hi RADIATIONRN2BE!

Did you use anything to help you study for the HESI? I was thinking of getting the HESI review book but I heard a lot of mixed reviews. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks so much!

I would email the professors. My Anatomy teacher at Cypress was so awesome that her notes were pretty much all the material we needed. She told us we could use any Anatomy textbook for the basics and pictures. Pharmacology was the same, the notes we had to buy through the bookstore was our textbook and was more than enough to get an A in the class. I also had an awesome Micro professor and her notes were more than sufficient to succeed in the class without a textbook. For Physiology I just used an earlier edition for like $20 on Amazon. His notes included all the info we needed. Gosh, looking back, I sure got lucky on professors. I give all credit to ratemyprofessors.com.

As far as laptops go, I never saw a student with one for any of my pre-req classes. That's not saying they weren't allowed but I just never saw anyone with one.
