Attractive nurses in danger?!

Published

So today I had the first day of my training for a home-health RN position...i wore a professional cloths-pale pink blouse and an elegant pants. From the get-go the nurse who was my preceptor for the day said you are too beautiful to wear street cloths for a home health job,you need to wear scrubs and stethoscope around your neck so when you go to not so good neighborhoods there is a less chance you someone will bother you.Wow I was surprised and it got me thinking are the attractive nurses in danger?!

One last thing, be careful. People have died working home health care. I know this, because my friend died 6 months ago on the job.

Just scrollling down the list of "hot" topics on Allnurses.com and coming across the title of this thread makes me cringe.

I can't wait until it fades from sight.

I have found that wearing scrubs mean business--when people see me in "civvies"...I do not get the same respect....

I find the exact same thing. Besides, in home health you are continually exposed to all sorts of stuff, why get it on your good clothes?

I've seen a couple young home health RNs wearing the very tight form fitting tops and snug pants that are the style today and wonder what they are thinking. They are good nurses and were not dressed slutty or anything like that, but nothing in their attire suggested "nursing."

I ran into a home health RN the other day dressed in business casual with a white lab coat and thought "That's more like it." That lady meant business.

No matter how beautiful one is now fast forward 20 years and no amount of staying in good shape is going to bring it back. Age waits for no one and while its nice to enjoy the perks of being attractive when young definitely embrace and cultivate other good qualities because your looks are going to fade...count on that.

I never said that beauty is very important.Yes it it an nice extra attribute and just because I'm speaking about does not mean I'm vain,I'm far from it,otherwise I wouldnt be a nurse right? Beauty is a gift from God and we should embrace it,not trashed.

Some might say they think healthcare workers are hotter in scrubs anyway :lol2:

Excuse me!!!!! Beauty is a gift from God??!!!! I think it is more like a "gift" from your mom's and dad's genes. God loves all and making someone in the outside beautiful is not His way of showing it, is making her/him humble and with a beautiful heart.

and this is the reason why i dont want to be a home health nurse... it sounds so dangerous. OP, just wear scrubs :) be safe

When I was in school I did a day with a home health nurse. This nurse drove with a CNA who served as a spanish interpreter as well as protection. They were always cognizant of who was home, how many cars out front, etc. Some people think you are there to snoop. They will take the nursing care, but will always be wary.
