Attractive nurses in danger?!

Published

So today I had the first day of my training for a home-health RN position...i wore a professional cloths-pale pink blouse and an elegant pants. From the get-go the nurse who was my preceptor for the day said you are too beautiful to wear street cloths for a home health job,you need to wear scrubs and stethoscope around your neck so when you go to not so good neighborhoods there is a less chance you someone will bother you.Wow I was surprised and it got me thinking are the attractive nurses in danger?!

Why DO You always talk about how beautiful you are...seriously? ANd no that's not snide...I'm really curious. I clean up nice too but I don't go on about it.

I consider it a matter of education. No doubt there are many beautiful nurses in the world and, I dare say, even in home health. Being beautiful should not be a cause for concern for personal safety.

OP feels that her beauty and elegant attire might be reasons to fear for her personal safety. It's possible that she has misunderstood her co-worker. Most posters here are attempting to explain her situation so that no matter how beautiful she may be, she need not be afraid. :):)

It is possible, but none of us were there, so it is also possible that everyone is interpreting a message that didn't need to be interpreted.

Yes, a few people did address the situation properly, as you did in your 3rd sentence above. But more than a few instead felt the need to make snide remarks.

My point is that it serves no purpose to cut someone down. The thread is easily answered without rude remarks.

I'm just sharing what the nurse said.I kind of freaked out cause I will be going to some bad neighborhoods.

You're not making the matters any better with this remark.

Other people are saying this not me.

well, dear, you aren't denying it, so you may as well admit it.

Ah. Well I'd take her advice and go with scrubs. I think they're more professional anyway. It says nurse....other things might say other professions and like someone said make you look available. Take her advice and you'll be okay. All women are in danger whether you're as ugly as a mud fence or as hot as hell.

I think you unintenionally dig holes for yourself, and don't dig yourself out very easily. Good luck

I have to second that. I tried to help dig you out, but I'm not going in with you.

Unintentionally too. I can spell lol.

Well at least she was not one of those who eats her young:) She was actually very nice and supporting. What a nice change of scenery.

It wouldn't matter your looks in a bad neighborhood. Get some pepper spray or something and keep it visible as well. If you keep about your business, keep your phone visible, and stay aware of your surroundings, you will be fine.

As long as you don't dress up like a hooker......

I work in some less desirable areas. At my company most nurses wear a laid back business casual (no jeans) but some wear scrubs. I usually wear scrub pants or khakis with a high necked solid color tee-my id tag is always out and visible too. I'm young and don't wear anything really fashionable or nice on purpose but its to look more professional and for comfort more than safety. Never had a problem in 2 years of home health in some sketchy neighborhoods.
