I know, I know, you're never supposed to talk about religion or politics, right....
I'm really not trying to start a religious debate, but just get a sense of where people are at. I'm a first year student and an atheist, yet all my fellow students and the nurses I'm meeting are believers.
If and when I become an atheist nurse, am I going to find myself a fish out of water?
evryone has experienced doubt..i believe that reading about a 'survey [junk science], stating that only people who believe in God are too stupid to pass sat tests and that praying is harmful to your health, is just a way to pat yourself on the back and saying 'gee i am so much smarter than those people
Nobody ever said anything about passing SAT tests or being too stupid. What I mentioned earlier is simply valid scientific research done by universities that has value to the study of sociology. Perhaps it is most interesting to those studying American sociology and religion. Your above statement is not even an oversimplification of my posts - it is something else entirely! FYI there is an inverse relationship between intelligence and religiosity. But that is a group average statistic amoung groups. I would never assume anything about any particular individual within any particular group.
I believe that there has been too much mollycoddling of fundamentalism in the US. We are at a point where evolution isn't being taught in science class for crying out loud. I think it is time for atheists/agnostics to stand up and just state facts and research and stop being so darn 'sensitive'. The fundamentalists are beginning to control US society because they aren't so 'sensitive'.
Are religious societies better?

Ah, statistics . . . you can make them say just about anything.

I think we need to back up a little bit and define religiosity. It seems you are talking about "excessively, obtrusively or sentimentally religious".
Can you give examples? Because I'm not seeing myself and the folks I go to church with as engaging in "religiosity".

There are of course vast degrees of religiosity. I myself by being a member of a Unitarian church am engaging in religiosity. An atheist who does not attend any church or spiritual service would not be engaging in religiosity. A fundamentalist Muslim who is orthodox would be engaging in a higher degree of religiosity than me. Many shades of gray w/religiosity.

Thank you Earle, it looks like this story is suspect. Ok, disregard.
What if the atheists are wrong? What if there really is a God, a heaven and a hell and those who do not believe in Jesus really do go to hell? If what the "religious fanatics" say is true, what will these people do then....if there really is no second chance except what we do and believe here on earth? Many people may say, "Well I dont want to believe in a God that would send good, moral people to hell." Who are we to say what God should do? We did not create the universe...we do not get a vote if God really is in charge. I think if all of this is true, it really wont matter how intelligent you are....God may not care if we say "Hey if you would have just shown me solid, scientific proof I would have believed." I know I will now be labeled by some as one of those psycho religious nuts, but I just wanted to express a different view than what has been discussed on the majority of the thread. And I do agree that everyone has a right to their own beliefs...just thought I would ask what if Christians were right?

Somebody say AMEN!
Central to the core of any personal beliefs I have is, and always has been, equality of all human beings.
