ASU Summer 2010 Program Applicants

U.S.A. Arizona

Published

Hello, everyone!

I submitted my application for the accelerated Summer 2010 program at ASU awhile ago, but I just realized that the February 1st deadline was coming up and wanted to see if anyone else here on allnurses.com applied or is applying. I'm so nervous, I've already applied once and didn't make it--I really, really, really, REALLY hope I can get in this time. :uhoh3:

I'm already starting to get impatient waiting for April!!! My whole life is on hold until then! I hate that I can't apply to any other schools because I'm stuck waiting for ASU and I don't want to pay a bunch of application fees if I make it into ASU regardless. :( Don't get me wrong, though, I really want to get into ASU's program. I just want to get into nursing, really. It's just a little annoying that we will find out about getting into the program so late in the year :banghead:.

Regardless, GOOD LUCK EVERYONE! :heartbeat

What scores are you all applying with?

There's a store on Gilbert and Germann that has a bunch of stethoscopes on sale (not sure if it's just online or store too), but the website is scrubsandbeyond.com. I know they have the Littmann Lightweight II for $40 and I've seen it $60 everywhere else. Also, I guess we'll find out April 16th, but does anyone know details on shoes?

When I went to the welcome meeting as an alternate last semester they said that if you bought the books in a bundle from ASU you would get access to an electronic copy of the book also. This might come in handy when needing sources for papers.

As far as books through ASU for Spring 2010 it says the Junior 1 package was $424.75 used and $566.25 new, so ours might be a little more? But, I also went through and added each book to a cart (with the exception of Pharmacology for Nursing Care and Health Promotion Throughout the Life Span 6th edition

Sorry for all the posts haha, but I noticed that for NUR 312 the ISBN number for the 3rd title is actually the ISBN number for the pocket companion which is listed as optional. Also, the ISBN number for the first pharmacology title is wrong. I went on Amazon and ordered books with the exception of Nursing Skills Online for Clinical Nursing Skills...the ISBN number doesn't lead me to it and I'm not 100% sure if I found the correct one by searching the title. Anyways, the total was about $416 with shipping.

Ohh, a bundle with electronic copies would be nice. E-copies make word documents, charts and whatnot a LOT easier. That ASU bundle looks pretty good. So, I went through and looked up the list price of all the books from their manufacturers, from Half.com and from Amazon. Here are the totals (plus or minus some difficulties or vacancies):

  • List Price Total from Manufacturers: $721.50
  • Half.com Total (does not include shipping, Fundamentals of Nursing or Nursing Skills Online): $330.28
  • Amazon Total (on brand new books with list price of Nursing Skills Online, not actual Amazon price): $568.74

Those totals are of ONLY the required texts. I did not look up any of the optional or additional resource books. From the looks of it, the ASU bundle would be a LOT cheaper. That's actually somewhat surprising, ASU being cheap! :p haha.

But yeah, there are actually a LOT of errors in our list, not to mention several repeats and wrong ISBN's. I've attached a word document outlining all of the prices and the errors. I was going to copy and paste it here, but it is kind of long, so I decided not to. :) I like visual representations and charts if you couldn't tell... haha. Regardless, if they do a package deal for us that is similarly priced to Spring 2010's books (I don't see why it wouldn't be...), then ASU is definitely the way to go. I guess we'll just have to waint and see--I know I'll probably wait to see what ASU has to offer us now that I know about these bundle deals. I wonder if we can customize it? I already have Mosby's Medical Dictionary... my Patho prof suggested it so I bought it last semester.

ka2010: As for the shoes, you can look here: http://www.apparelprousa.com/ASU/asu-dress-code.php That is the website of the company that we order our scrubs from and they have a little blurb about shoes (white, all-leather, basically) and general dress code information.

Yeah, I noticed that mistake, too. ASU's ISBN was wrong for Communications in Nursing and for the Pharmacology for Nursing Care. I also came across problems with the Nursing Skills Online for Clinical Nursing Skills & Techniques, I'm not sure what we need. I came across some "bundles" on Amazon and then a different bundle on the manufacturer website (which was a LOT cheaper). I'm not sure which we need.

Anyways, the total was about $416 with shipping.

Wow! Congrats! :yeah: That's WAY different from my total... did you buy everything brand new through Amazon, or was it through the individual sellers via Amazon? I didn't even look at those.

If you want to look at my totals and see what I found for the Nursing Skills Online thing, open the attached document to my post before this :)

the package is actually quite a good deal. with an increase in price you get the e-books (which is a godsend. it makes your projects and papers almost easy to research for from the books) both online and offline, and less hassle navigating through the errors on the book list. our package included everything except four or five things we needed to purchase outside of it.

the things outside of the package were:

nursing diagnosis by carpenito-moyet

davis' drug guide

nursing's social policy statement (i don't suggest buying this. one of your classmates will. just borrow it from them for the one day you need to read it.)

APA style manual (don't get this either. use the purdue owl APA style guide online instead. the current edition of the apa manual is full of errors and the online guide is cheaper aka free)

calculating drug dosages workbook/cd

of course, all of this was for my term. yours might be different. it probably won't if you have the same instructors.

PineappleCrush: 3 of the titles I purchased new from Amazon which were: Davis's Drug Guide, Calculating Drug Doses, and Publication Manual of the APA, so those were free shipping. The other titles I purchased used or new from a different seller. I don't mind the books being used as long as they're readable haha. For the Nursing Skills Online I saw that ASU also has it for $60 so I might just buy it there. I figure I'll save the $150 (well, $90 with Nursing Skills included) from the bundle and spend it on scrubs haha. Thanks for putting that list together!

I agree with tttt, dont buy the apa manual (i just use owl purdue online too) and dont buy the nursing social policy statement. I do recommend just buying the bundle through ASU because the ebooks that you get is awesome. (I wish i had :( ) The nursing skills online isn't a text book, its online skill modules that you buy the code to have access to. It comes in the bundle from ASU but if you dont buy the bundle then you have to buy it separately from evolve. Dont buy nursing skills online from amazon or anything like that because the code you buy there could be an old one that doesnt work anymore.

hey everyone:

so after browsing through the list of books, and visiting amazon and ebay, i've purchased all but a few books. i'm not sure if i should purchase the remaining "additional resources" listed under nur 312. the nice thing is that most of the books overlap. i'm going to wait on the "nursing skills online..." thing and see what asu says. other than that, my total thus far is $355.76 (alot less than over $700). at first i was worried about getting the wrong book, but i went by edition and i think i'll be ok. how is everyone else doing?

Hey just to let everyone know, i went to the nursing offices today and spoke with them about the text books and the lady at the baccalaureate programs office said that she thought the text book list wasn't supposed to go out with these packets because there might be some changes to it. she did not have the revised list at the time but told me she would email it to me when she got in touch with the person in charge of that. You might want to get clarification on this and possibly hold up on purchasing until this gets cleared up.

I was wondering about that APA book... there's no point to get it because of the wonderfulness that is the OWL at Purdue. That's good to hear that there are books that we don't need... although those are two of the cheapest books >.

I think I'm going to hold off on getting the books, especially in light of what airborneinf82 has mentioned lol! That's crazy that they didn't even know that the book lists went out with our packets... Could you update us when you get the email if there are any changes? That would be absolutely fantastic!

I'm going to wait and see what ASU has to offer, it may not even be that expensive (although I doubt it could beat scperez11's or ka2010's prices!). I REALLY like the ebooks, and when you buy the books off of ebay/half.com or Amazon, you're not really guaranteed the ebook. Amazon *should* have the ebook codes, but they may not. Ebooks make things SO much easier with the Ctrl + F function, omg. I'm so tempted to buy the books simply because I'm anxious to get started and want to start getting everything together! haha :p

Do you guys know anything about financial aid, like if there's anything we can get to help cover summer sessions? My scholarships do not cover summer sessions and with all these books and now the $750 surcharge I'm not sure where I'm going to get the money (hooray for parents!). I'm going to get a loan in the next couple weeks, but I was just curious if anyone knew about any summer scholarships or anything.
