ASU Summer 2010 Program Applicants

U.S.A. Arizona

Published

Hello, everyone!

I submitted my application for the accelerated Summer 2010 program at ASU awhile ago, but I just realized that the February 1st deadline was coming up and wanted to see if anyone else here on allnurses.com applied or is applying. I'm so nervous, I've already applied once and didn't make it--I really, really, really, REALLY hope I can get in this time. :uhoh3:

I'm already starting to get impatient waiting for April!!! My whole life is on hold until then! I hate that I can't apply to any other schools because I'm stuck waiting for ASU and I don't want to pay a bunch of application fees if I make it into ASU regardless. :( Don't get me wrong, though, I really want to get into ASU's program. I just want to get into nursing, really. It's just a little annoying that we will find out about getting into the program so late in the year :banghead:.

Regardless, GOOD LUCK EVERYONE! :heartbeat

What scores are you all applying with?

Tarabara -

Are you in the accelerated program? Also, do you think it is possible to work while in nursing school. If so, how many hours would you do?

Thanks a ton!

Hey guys :) Umm I personally dont work and dont think i could handle it. But there are several others in my class who do work, i think it just depends on the time of person you are. I can only focus on one thing at a time. But I know that the people who do work mostly only work weekends. And I am liking it but its also kinda boring so far lol. The first few weeks we talked a lot about 'therapeutic communication' and things like that. We've done bed making, transfers, and other cna stuff like that. Jr 1 is all about "the basics". But it is fun, and just before spring break was injections which i was really excited for because I'm a nerd lol. We did subq injections on our partners and intradermal injections on hotdogs! haha For clinicals so far we went to an elderly retirement facility and interviewed a 'well elder' and made them a care plan. Then we also went to a preschool and taught a lesson of our choosing; my partner and I taught the 3 year old class about brushing their teeth. They were really cute! So its fun stuff like that but not really hands on yet. We start our long term care rotation after spring break though so hopefully i get some hands on experience there! :)

Also, I am not in an accelerated program, its 2 years. And there were 60 people accepted in my rotation. Have they told you how things are going to work? Because things are different than they used to be, with you guys starting in the summer. You'll be jr 1's this summer and then jr 2's during the fall semester, at the same time that I will be a jr 2. It used to be that 120 were accepted and in jr 2 they were split, with 60 in a class doing adult health rotation, and 60 in a class doing psych/mental health rotation for half the semester and then they switch for the other half. So i THINK my class will be doing psych/mental health while you guys are doing adult health during the first half of the fall 2010 semester, and then we'll switch for the second half of that semester. Did that make sense?

Thanks very much Tarabara! I feel like I could do some work, but I don't think that I really want to. It'd be nice just to focus on school. Did you sign up with Banner (they pay you 15K for you 3 year commitment)? If so, was it hard to get accepted? Thanks again!

Thanks for all of the information!! :yeah: It's really exciting to hear about the stuff that we will hopefully be doing in the near future! :) I was really surprised about the teaching bit--I never knew that we had to do that! That sounds really fun!

I don't specifically know anything for sure as far as the scheduling go--although I do know that you're right about us being Jr 2's in the Fall and then Sr 1's in the Spring at the same time that you guys will be. I also knew about the switching off part because I have a friend who is a Sr 1 right now and was telling me about that. What you suggested definitely makes sense to me, so I would venture a guess that you're correct, but I don't like to assume too much with ASU. They like to switch things up on us a lot! :p haha!

I did look up the Summer schedule, though (I've been trying to scrounge for whatever information I can get haha), and there are four classes that start May 17th (only a week after finals! :() and go until August 18th that have 60 spots available, all of which are open, which makes me think that they are for the Summer 2010 students. Those four are:

NUR 310: Nursing Concepts

NUR 311: Pharmacology

NUR 330: Professional Nurse Attributes

NUR 394: Topic: Nursing Concepts for Psychiatric and Mental Health

So... I'm not really sure anymore haha. What you said made total sense to me, but according to what the Summer Course Catalog says I guess the Summer 2010 students will be doing to be doing Psych/Ment during the summer? Then again, the Course Catalog could be wrong--it doesn't have any clinical/Nurse Practice classes up yet.

I don't really know... :uhoh3: Sometimes I wonder if ASU knows what it is doing, haha!

But thank you again so much for all of the information! Good luck with the LTC clinicals starting next week! :)

Thank you, good luck to you guys too :) You all should post here when you get your letters!!

@AZapplicant: A woman from banner came to talk to us about the banner program, but she didn't come until like half a week before the application was due! (grrr) So i didn't apply, but you can apply i think like twice a year so I can in the future if I want. I just didn't this time because Im not sure that I want to stay in arizona after i graduate and i didn't want to be forced to stay. They told us that if they give you the scholarship and then you dont complete the years working for them then you have to pay everything back in full by 6 months! That kinda scared me, but i still might apply in the future.

@Pinapplecrush: NUR 310: Nursing Concepts

NUR 311: Pharmacology

NUR 330: Professional Nurse Attributes

NUR 394: Topic: Nursing Concepts for Psychiatric and Mental Health

^those are the Jr 1 classes except nur 394 for junior one is "psychomotor skills for professional nursing practice". I just registered for jr 2 and when i registered i signed up for nur 394 nursing concepts for psych, so i dont think you'll be doing that this summer, but who knows, you're right ASU likes to change things lol. Also there is one more jr 1 class called nur 320 which is lab.

I think this site is great, and when we all have jr 2 at the same time we should post questions/comments on here! :)

We find out soon :)

i'm in tarabara's class, but i don't think i know who she is. but to add to what she said, during the summer you'll be going through a J1 term just like previous classes have, except that yours is quite a few weeks shorter than others (and it will be a lot hotter). the courses you will be taking are:

310 - nursing theory/concepts

311 - pharm

320 - lab/clinical

330 - professional development

394 - psychomotor skills

the classes at ASU are set up so 194/294/394/494 numbers represent special topics courses, so you can have multiple courses with the same three digit number. the psych theory course you mentioned was probably for the mayo students, who are the only ones who should be doing psych over this summer.

starting in the fall, the current J1 students will be doing their first seven weeks in psych, while the summer J1 students will be start with their adult health rotation. then they switch.

for fall, J2s will all be taking:

psych nursing theory

psych lab/clinical

adult health nursing theory

adult health lab/clinical

evidence-based practice

informatics or health in the media (online)

i hope that clears some stuff up.

So if I remember correctly, our letters might go out today? That means we'll know tomorrow? ..... Latest Mon/Tues (hopefully they're not slacking at the nursing office).. lol

So.... YES the letters went out today! We should be getting the letters tomorrow!

BUT...

You can actually call Student Services and ask what the lowest admitted score was, and they'll tell you!!!!!!

When I asked, she said that she's pretty sure it was a 5.491. I'm not taking this as a final word, but the person I talked with is really informed so I'm pretty sure she's right, she just may be off a couple of digits or something. Maybe. I don't know... haha, I'm not sure how to feel! I'm going to wait until I get the actual letter tomorrow, but does anyone else want to try calling?!

Student Services number is (602) 496-0888 and just tell them that you applied for Summer 2010.

I don't know how to feel because it won't be official until I get my letter but.... ahh!!!!!

That's great if that's the case!

So you are saying I might have a chance? Anyways I have to work tomorrow please do post the official cut off score if you do get your letter. I will get excited when I get my letter though. :smokin:

GOT THE LETTER!

The lowest advancement score was indeed a 5.491. There were 85 applicants, 81 met the minimum requirements and 60 are advanced. There is an Intent to Enroll form that is needed to be returned by March 26th, and there is a big Welcome Meeting on April 16th for admitted students to order uniforms, books, etc. Lots of other information, but for the mean time,

:clpty::ancong!::clpty:

I believe everyone on here made it, yes? Hello, classmates! :)

I am BEYOND thrilled right now! :heartbeat:heartbeat:heartbeat
