Nurses Spirituality

Published

Hi everyone!! I come from a very Christian family...My mom and stepdad are both devout Christians, and while I was raised in a religious household I have yet to develop a connection with God. I've recently taken up nursing (I just finished my nursing school applications!!) and I am curious to know if anyone was in this same position before/while pursuing nursing. Will nursing bring me closer or farther away from God? Obviously I didn't choose to go into nursing because I want to work on my faith, but I can't help but wonder if this will either help or hurt :-)

If anyone has any stories or inspiration for me that would be great!!!

OK God (Davey), I'll behave.

Could not decide whether to give this a "thumbs up" or a "haha" emoticon.

I enjoy conversations with atheists and feel safe around them more than evangelical Christians. However, I have to say that this time you contributed to a wrong topic. The topic is about how nursing brings a Christian closer to god.

OK, I will try! But after all I am just a sinner, just sayin

Hello,

No profession will bring you closer or further to God. But being a nurse, you are in a position to see others and their privileges or vulnerabilities closely, and this could be self realization. It is what you believe God is that will foster your faith. One of my ICU nurse recently pointed out about how amazing our bodies are. We see a patient on life support, ventilator, big machine that does the work of our lungs for us, but it is not even close to our natural lungs.

Or a dialysis machine that filters the blood but think about how small our kidneys are in comparison to the machine and how efficiently they work.

All these reaffirm the presence of God and how well He planned this universe. If you look around you, you will find ways to get closer to Him.

When you see that everyone suffers no matter what religion and no matter what prayers are offered you'll hopefully realise that the idea of a personal god is a ridiculous notion and move further away from the god fallacy.

This topic is about whether it would bring you closer OR further away, so I believe Grumpy is quite correct to suggest that the assumption god is in all of us we just need to let him in a presumption not to be put on everyone.

Regardless of your spiritual beliefs, or lack thereof, 99.9% of the time at most jobs you will need to keep them under your hat

This is so not true. Any non profit catholic/ Christian hospital in the US will gladly facilitate and support all prayer and spiritual input from nurses to their patients. I could literally start naming hundreds of hospitals that will allow this...

Operative words there are "in the US." This is an international forum and osceteacher and myself are in the UK - unsure where other posters are from - and trying to proselytise and/or pray with patients in the UK can and will get you fired.

Curious as to why you downgraded/disagreed with my post? It was a statement of fact and nothing there that was "grumpy" or could be disagreed with.

This is precisely why I upgraded your post. I get so fed up when a post is downgraded simply because it is stating something that people do not want to hear, especially from the position of moral superiority. Every post made on this site has to always be politically correct. One can never just make a statement of fact. How many people refrain from posting at all just because of this negative attitude.
