Nurses General Nursing Article

There has been a lot of discussion in the news as well as here on allnurses the past several days regarding negative comments made by "The View" host, Joy Behar regarding the nursing profession. These comments have sparked outrage in not only the entire nursing community, but the public as well.

Brian McLane, CEO of Safe ID Trust's mother is a nurse, and has been for more than 30 years. She has earned the respect of her colleagues and most importantly, her patients. Mrs. McLane was outraged when she heard of the comments on the The View regarding nurses. She knows all nurses give a lot of themselves in their chosen career.

Yes, they use THEIR stethoscopes for physical assessments and, then utilizing critical thinking skills, implement the proper care for their patients.

Mrs. McLane talked with her son, Brian. He decided he wanted to use his company, Safe ID Trust to give back to the nursing community and to recognize the importance of nurses. Not only was his mother a nurse, but other family members are nurses and some have also been on the receiving end of nursing care. Mrs. McLane and her son have come up with an opportunity in which they can give back to nurses and show them how important they are.

We are proud to announce that allnurses and CEO Brian McLane of SafeIDTrust will be joining forces to honor nurses across the country. allnurses has been selected to be the avenue through which SafeIDTrust will give away 10,000 one-year family memberships to their identity theft recovery plan to nurses and nursing students who are registered members of allnurses.

Still not sure this is for you? Read on for more information...

What is identity theft and why should nurses be concerned?

According to the U.S. Department of Justice,

Quote
"identity theft is defined as the unauthorized use or attempted misuse of an existing credit card other existing account, the misuse of personal information to open a new account or for another fraudulent purpose, or a combination of these types of misuse."

"Did you know that approximately 1 in 30 consumers will have their identity stolen this year? If you do not have a quality ID Theft Recovery Plan for you and your family, you are at risk for spending countless hours and thousands of dollars trying to restore your identity."

Identity theft can ruin a person's credit, reputation, and future. Identity Theft is so much more than credit card theft. It can include a person assuming your identity and being arrested in YOUR name, buying a car or home or even getting married. Some cases are more complicated than others. Some of the most horrendous identity thefts include tax fraud, medical fraud, and legal ramifications of crimes committed in someone's name.

Identity theft can happen to anyone, including children.

Quote
The hard fact is that identities cannot be protected from being stolen.

Aren't all Identity Theft products the same?

SafeIDTrust is different from most Identity Theft products on the market in that it focuses almost exclusively on recovery. The FTC continues to state that Identity Theft cannot be prevented. Even one of the main credit reporting agencies reported a huge breach of consumer data this year. It's not a matter of "if", but "when" you information will be breached.

SafeIDTrust uses a company that does monitor and reports any threat it detects. Once you are concerned you have a breach, simply contact SafeIDTrust through the number provided after registration and you will be assigned a ID Counselor who will walk you through the initial steps. That includes filing a police report and signing a limited power of attorney so SafeIDTrust can make calls and send letters on your behalf. From there it's total "hands-off" recovery. Most people find their identity restored to "pre-breach" status in 90 days or less.

Quote
Studies show that most people spend anywhere from 175 to 600 hours in restoring their identity to pre-theft status. This equates to 4 to 5 40-hour workweeks. Unfortunately, one out of 4 people who become a victim of identity theft never fully restore their identity

For our nurses, the amount of time it takes to restore a breach is exhausting. Since it has to be done during work hours, it can drastically affect a persons' work day. The stress and hassles associated with trying to restore ones' identity are massive. It is a job best left to experts.

Skeptical is my middle name, but surely I am not the only one who thinks this deal sounds to good to be true...am I?

I was at first, but then I read around about them and found they are a reputable business and seems they are reaching out to nurses over the flack from the View. Very nice of them

Is there a catch, sure, this is free for 1 year only, after that it appears it will be full price. It is like a drug dealer, give you your first bit for free, then your hooked and will pay whatever later.

OK, bad analogy, they are in no way bad like a drug dealer, but that is the gist of it. Offer a service that normally costs money to a specific group for free (with little real cost to them, probably less that a major advertisement in a notational outlet), then even if only 10% of those that got the free year pay, they are still making profit. They are a business, and this is a great way to attract customers, and we as nurses get something out of it. Can't really see a big downside for the first free year.

Would be a sweeter deal if after the first free year we could continue at half price or something. I plan on taking the free year, then not renewing (unless of course they do give a discount, lets see if they really support nursing).

All set! Went through just fine. Thank you for such a generous gift!

Most of us do at least occasional shopping and bill-paying online, and security leaks can happen at any time. A few months ago, our bank experienced a security breach and ended up deactivating all debit cards until things were sorted out. We were on vacation at the time and couldn't figure out why our cards didn't work. It was a bit embarrassing to have the card denied and it took a bit of time to contact the bank and confirm everything, but I would much rather deal with an inconvenience like that compared to identity theft!

My youngest child passed away 10 years ago, just before her third birthday. One of the parents in the grief support group my DH and I attended discovered that her son't social security number had been stolen and was being used by someone who had created a false identity for himself. Apparently, "clean" SS#'s are a hot commodity. I have our family's accountant check my daughter's SS# every year to make sure that nothing unusual pops up. Who would troll lists of deceased children in order to steal their SS numbers?? There are some horrible people in this world.
