Are We Truly That Gullible?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I was scrolling through Facebook earlier this evening and ran across a headline that someone had posted from Gomerblog, a satirical medical blog. The article was about a nurse losing her license because she gave a patient the wrong sandwich. I clicked on the article, read it, and was amused, I went back to the Facebook posting to read the comments and was shocked by what nurses had commented about this article. Most of them reacted with outrage over how this poor nurse had been treated. Perhaps some of them had only read the headline, and not the entire article, but some of them quoted the article in their comments. These were nurses, people on my friends list that I have worked with in the past. I was dumbfounded that they believed this was true. Are we that gullible that we believe everything we see on the Internet?

Facebook supposedly is going to mark links to The Onion as satire because of people that don't recognize satire when they see it. So well, yes. People are that gullible.

I'd love for Gomer to write an article on the PVT. Imagine the fun we'd have!

I read that one yesterday. Hilarious! I love that site:)

Specializes in pediatrics; PICU; NICU.

All I can say is that if I'm ever in the hospital and the nurse brings me a sandwich with creamy peanut butter instead of crunchy, I will have her (or his) license!!

Well, not trying to be funny, but a nurse can possibly lose her license if the pt has a peanut butter allergy but gets a peanut butter sandwich anyway..

I did not read the article.

Our hospital does not have a burn unit, but just in case a burn walks through our doors, we better start stocking eggnog. :sneaky:

I've never come across GomerBlog, but now that I know it's there, I have it bookmarked on my Favorites bar!!

There's an 'article' on patients with 10/10 pain that hits home for me, LOL, having spent too long on med-surg: Patient Still 10/10 Pain on Pain Scale Even After a ‘Being-Set-On-Fire' Analogy

Good stuff!

Clearly you didn't read the article. ;) The article is on a satire blog similar to The Onion or Saturday Night Live. It's meant to be ridiculous.

Maybe nurses are a little hypersensitive sometimes, to the exclusion of common sense? I love that a bunch of docs remembered to include us nurses in the fun. Well, I recommend the site for anyone who wants a good chuckle. I particularly like this one:

Nurse Relieved to Find Out that Patient's Family Member's Aunt is a Nurse

It even has a nice twist at the end!

Well, I guess I will admit I have a really twisted sense of humor! I just signed up for the weekly email from Gomerblog.

Here's my favorite so far:

Cat on Ventilator, Still Full Code After 4 Years - Medical Satire - GomerBlog

I'll have to keep this in mind when my cats get to the point where they have no quality of life but I want to keep them "alive". NOT!

Specializes in Maternity.

I personally felt this one was very aprapos for Allnurses.

Are we that gullible? In a country where a sizable minority see a conspiracy theory behind everything from 9/11 to vaccinations, yes, as a society we will believe what we want to believe, facts be damned. It is more than a little disheartening to see a complete lack of critical thinking in some healthcare professionals, though.
